So I walked out into my shop and looked around at the extra metal I had lying around and thought to myself.... "Self, what can you turn this pile of scrap into this weekend?"Well this is what I came up with, I still have some welding to do to complete it and then off to blast it and paint... What do y'all think so far?
Reply:Very good use of scrap, looks good. My only question would be is there a reason it is so far out from the bumper?
Reply:The first couple of pics looked pretty ugly but the "walls" you added sure make the rack!  Very nice.  Did you do the fishmouth notching by 'eyeball' or do you have a jig/notcher?My only thought/concern is:   What size is your square-tubing and why did you make the little "gooseneck" in it, just to gain what appears to be only 2" of greater clearance?  I'm hoping your welds are good because with a big payload (and the already beefy frame) you've got a lot "riding" (excuse the pun) on those couple welds.Lincoln AC225 & MigPak 140, Lincoln Magnum SpoolGun, Miller Spectrum 375-X Plasma, Syncrowave 200 TIG, Millermatic 252 MIG, Miller Digital Elite, General 7x12" horiz/vert bandsaw, 3' box/pan brake, 20 ton press, milling machine, 12x28 lathe, etc.
Reply:The square tubing is 2"x2"x.250" The reason for the little goose neck is a friend of mine is going to use it to move some stuff this summer and he has a Honda Pilot so the extra 2" clearance is mainly for him. The distance from the bumper is for the same vehicle so that he can still open his rear hatch with gear loaded.
Reply:Oh, as far as the coping of the tubes, I just went down to my local Lowes and got some EMT in the 1" variety and a bi-metal hole saw the same diameter and used my drill press to cut them.
Reply:That looks pretty darn nice and it'll look REALLY good once it's painted too...I always wondered about preventing 'shear and twist' of the tube, but seeing as how you have .25 wall, you're probably fine for even moderate to heavy loads.  Personally, I would have thought that two detachable rods (merely optional for 'type' of Load..) that could connect to the 'chain hooks' would really help eliminate 'twist' if you had an 'uneven' or REALLY heavy load.Cheers,/J...Miller Diversion 165120 amp Buzz BoxVictor Oxy/Ace Oxy/LPGSmith "Little" Oxy/LPGHypertherm Powermax 30Lot's of Misc. tools n' crap....
Reply:Thanks, Im still undecided on the color to paint it. I was thinking of going white to match my truck and be a little different than the normal black... what do you think?
Reply:I like white, or silver myself. You might get some of that consicuity tape, like they use on trailers and big rigs, and put it on the back and sides, so it shows up well.http://www.awdirect.com/reflexite-da...spicuity-tape/..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:A little update, I put in the expanded metal fllor and finished welding all of the tubing. Now I just need to media blast it then paint it...AHP 200xMiller Trailblazer 251 NTMiller Legend AEAD-200-LEEastwood MIG-175Eastwood 40A Plasma CutterDillon Mk 5 OA setup
