1" Steel Plate

Hello,I'm a small excavating contractor in North Central N.J.  I have one machine with a few attachments.  I would like to store the attachments on a 1" x 8' W x 15' L plate so I can move them all in one pick.  I've received prices around 30/s.f. which seems quite expensive.  Can anyone tell me if there is a used market for this?Thank You in advanceFrank

Reply:The only used market you are going to find would be a scrap yard, go to one that lets you look around and see if you can find plate that will suite your needs.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:Steel is generally sold by the pound (actually hundred weight), in your example that's $75 per hundred or 0.75/lb. I get real nervous when I'm quoted by the square foot. My price on some wide beam last week was around $57 per 100.For plate I've been using Chapel Steel out of Portland, OR. They have a location in Philadelphia, PA... not sure if that's too far for you. Might give them a call. Trucking is really driving the material costs. Find a yard that brings it in by rail and your cost will generally be lower. http://www.chapelsteel.com/locations.htmlI hope your planning on supporting this plate on some beams... even 1" plate is like spaghetti.
Reply:I would look into building a frame to carry the implements rather than a piece of plate, It will be stiffer and probably easier to move around
Reply:$75.00 CWT is what I'm paying in Alaska. So $75.00 CWT in the 48 is high way high.
Reply:The price you were quoted is probably about right, this is a big chunk of steel.   4'x8' is probably less per pound or sq ft.  Have you really thought this through and considered the weight?  You want to store all your "small" machine implements on one plate for easy moving, right?1" plate is 40.8 lbs/sqft.  (http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/st...ht-d_1561.html)  You said 8' x 15'  That's 120 sqft120 x 40.80 = 4,896 lbs.  To handle this flat will be like handling a sheet of paper from a note pad unless it has substantial support secured beneath it.  Add the weight of the support framing, add the weight of the stuff you intend to store/move on it and you are going to have a rather heavy load.  What kind of machinery do you have to handle this load?  When you say you want to move it "in one pick" I presume you mean by crane.  A big crane.Oh yes, I need to mention also that you need to provide some means of securing each implement to the plate lest it slide like an omelet off a greasy spatula!       I'll watch from a vantage point in the next county.I am sure this can be done but unless you always work large sites that have one or more big cranes I don't see this as practical.- MondoMember, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.

Reply:Hi 4900 lbs mill price is .52 lb plus frt . try Joseph Fazzio in so jersey for used plate.People paid   almost 1.00 lb at Ace Manzo auction in NJ for road plates .
Reply:I'll second Fazio's. Price's are fair and huge stock. I believe they have a store at the RT.33-34 circle in wall.
