Hey guys, I am fairly new to welding, and in September I started taking welding classes at the local college. Right now I am on Vertical Up running 6010 rods. My question is what is the technique that I need to use to run a good bead on vertical up.Thanks!Cody T
Reply:The root is to be done with a stepping or whipping action. no side-to-side, just in the direction of travel. Watch your electrode inclination, as too much forward will hurt you at the top and cause the rod to fingernail earlier because of the longer arc length on excess forward inclination. The weld should not be huge, the point is penetration. For the fill/hot pass, you should do a weave. Very tight arc on the edges of the root, trying to fill the joint to about 80-90% full. It should be very close to flat across the bead profile to set yourself up for success on the cap pass.On your cover/cap pass, use a longer arc to just wash the edges over. Herringbone or crescent weave works fine.Since you did not mention the actual joint or prep, I'll throw some heat numbers out for a few.If this is a fillet weld on a lap joint or tee joint,(3F) 75-90 amps on a 1/8" electrode will work great for the root, fill the same, then down to about 60-70 on the cap. If you have arc force, I max it on the root and fill, and down to min on the cap.If this is an open root groove weld (3G), then 65-80 amps on the root with a 1/8" electrode will work good with a 1/8" land and 1/8" gap prep. 80-90 amps on the hot pass, and 65-75 on the cap will get you close.

Reply:something I was taught that works very well on open roots in any position is to hold the rod at a perfectly square angle to the piece with little or no movement.  It takes some practice and lots of faith because it looks like its going to blow out at any second but with practice its left near perfect root passes everytime.Have we all gone mad?
