I know you guys frown on anyone welding on a truck frame that has to ask but this truck wont hit the city streets any more. We will be using it on the farm and off road toy. I love this truck and has been in the family from new. I have only been welding  on and off for 3 years and this should be some fun practice as i cant make it any worse than it already is. The frame is broken behind the spring perch. It is a 1989 4x4 silverado. The frame is c channel and i have two ideas. Splice the frame between the spring hangers and sister it with some c channel weld and bolt it. Or instead of sistering the channel flip it inside out then bolt and weld. I like this since i can use pre made channel since it will not hug the frame. Will this cause any problems? I dont want to make a stress point. Attached Images
Reply:Picture 1 is how you want to do it & bolt it on after any cracks have been welded.I've seen big truck frames stretched with an angle cut, but they always plate the repair area & bolt it on either side of the weld.  When this was done, it was always done in front of the axle also.  Not over the axle centerline, because that is a high stress area.Best thing to do, if you want to keep the truck, get a donor frame from a junkyard & plate it as in pic 1, then reassemble the truck.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
Reply:Check out the book "Welding, Fabrication & Repair, Questions and Answers" by Frank Marlow, 2002.  Lots of descriptions on how to fix vehicle frames, as well as many other issues.  Its around $30 at Amazon.  Not everyone agrees, but I found it a great reference.  That book sits next to the porcelain throne at my house.. Lots of cool tips... --zipzit
Reply:i would weld the frame and then box the frame to add strength. for added strength i would add a piece of 1/4 strap to the out side of the frame .... automotive frame aren't heat treated like truck frame so it is easy to work with we have done many frame stretches on dually truck to add a third axle and we've done many frame jobs to lift trucks ..... good luck
Reply:Thanks for all the info guys and the book tip. I just bought it on amazon
Reply:if it was me i would grind the crack to a V then fill with weld grind smooth then make a fish plate for it ( pic 1) and then weld that it will not move
