I was bored today from lack of work thanks to all of the s**thead politicians in and from IL. Anyways, I figured I would do some relaxing meditation and pad an angle. 1/8" 6013 @ approx 105A DC+. I really don't favor 6013 so I figured I would start playing with the thirty pounds I have and then I will use the thirty five pounds of 3/32" 7014. I hate to just throw it away, but I really only use 6010 & 7018. Oh well, tell me what ya think. (not that its like brain surgery or anything!)"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"

Reply:BTW, it shows the difference in machines. On my two Lincolns I'm running the same rod at around 135amps to achieve the same results. It just shows that there's no "set" amperage for a particular rod."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Man if your that board move to VA and work for me. I am getting ready for a plant shutdown and will be deep in work for 3 weeks(plenty of pictures to follow). Thoose welds look good, hope you all have some work soon!
Reply:Geez, shoulda been more group hugs on these picsNice welds, great control. It took me years of doing it slightly wrong, watching it done right, then picking it up to do this well. It's the father and mother of all the process's(sp?) you see today.  Before all the others, there was stick.  Apologies to the blacksmiths out there  Little poetic license hereIf it was some snake scale looking MIG weld, y'all would be tripping all over yourselves to belly up to the bar"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:C'mon now Stickman, you know that Illinois has got the best politicians that money can buy. And Emperor Daley was kind enough to send one of them to the White House so the rest of the country can get a taste of how things are done in shoo-cow-go. Anyways, them some nice welds. I'm with Farmersamm...mig, tig and electron beam welding are nice, but when things on the farm need tending give me a stick. 6013 always gets a bad rap but it's the right stuff in the right situations. You've inspired me to dig some out from under the 6010/7018 and try a few rods again. Reply:Nothing wrong with keeping your hand in. I've been trying to do some of that lately since I'm planning to take a class next month to try and work on 2 certs. Silly to spend class time getting back up to speed on things I haven't had the time to work on this winter due to bad weather. Need to get the practice in before work picks up and I can't find the time to practice. I'm hoping I can bang the certs out quick and take advantage of the class time to work on some of my weaker areas. Those nice peeling slag welds are what you always want to see. My 7018 practice runs last week weren't quite that nice. I could only get 3/4 to peel before breaking. The key is usually having the settings right and just taking your time. I think too many guys hate stick because they run too cold and rush too fast because the slag scares them into thinking they are getting ugly welds. When the welds come out ugly, they think they need to cool down and speed up more, rather than the reverse. Nice job...No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan

Reply:Originally Posted by BoostinjdmSam, it prolly wouldn't hurt to put a meter to you machine and see if the indicated amps is higher than actual. We had an old hobart at work and always had to set it about 20 amps higher than the other machines.  The other guys just thought it needed more oomph.  Turns out the pointer just got bumped and was no longer accurate.

Reply:Well I finally borrowed my brothers Milwaukee band saw so I can see how the inside looked. To me it looks solid."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:Funny thing StickMan...when I was looking here at your pictures my wife saw the screen and said "that looks like our place".Sure enough....porta band in the gravel drive, rusty metal here and there, and the finishing touch...a 5 gallon bucket from Big R. They must have been givin them away at one time because I got one and with all the 5 gallon buckets we got around I know I never would have bought one. Reply:It's a good thing someone bumped this threadA saw slice of the weld might show good fusion, but not necesarily the degree of penetration.  A flap wheel, or etching chemicals give a better idea. And with penetration, you get an admixture of the parent metal in the bead.  Sometimes good, sometimes not so good.If I live to 100, I'll never fully understand it all.BTW...........still nice looking welds"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
