I have found mention of these, but nobody sells them that I know of.They are suppose to be the best in every way. Can't even find a pic with google.Anybody have any info. I would like to try one and have it on hand at our technical school.I always thought silicon nitrate was "black chrome"...
Reply:I think there is one off to the left in this pic. I might phone these guys. (BTH Spares) Attached Images
Reply:What's wrong with plain alumina cups? Incredibly cheap, relatively tough and long lived. Mind you, they are pink!
Reply:Silicon nitrate is not a common compound such as silicon carbide or aluminum oxide and is mainly used in making semiconductors. It may also be used for coating other items, but so far as I know, isn't made in massive amounts suitable for making TIG cups from.Just for general information, pure, fused aluminum oxide is clear. The natural, crystalline varieties are usually colored; sapphires are blue, a purple variety is called oriental amethyst, a yellow form oriental topaz and the red form is the ruby.I suspect the TIG cups are made of sintered alumina with traces of chromium oxide in them. That probably gives the pink color, but this is just a guess.
