Here's some tool boxes I made for a wrecker. I made the ones cut into the bed a month ago and just installed the underbody boxes Thurs. The top boxes aren't that big a deal though fitting them to the truck was a chore. But the under body boxes I under bid rather badly. I wasn't counting on so much fiddly work getting the drawers to work the way I wanted. Oh well live and learn.   These are all made out of 12ga. The top boxes where welded with my XMT304 and Suitcase RC12 with .030" wire and C25 gas. I don't remember the settings but they changed a lot during the job. I was my first real job with the XMT and I was learning the settings. One thing I did learn is that I'm not to happy with the XMT on lower amps in CV mode (of course it didn't help that I didn't have any .030" tips at the time).   The bottom boxes where done with my 252 and the .030" wire. After my experience with the XMT and the .030" wire I decided to move it to the 252 and put the .035 wire in the XMT. So far that seems like a good decision. I'm a lot happier with the way the 252 is running the .030 wire. I'd never run it in the 252 before but I've run a lot of it in a MM135 and MM175 which I had before getting the MM252. I think I like it. I really loved the way the MM135 welded when I got it but I kept running into duty cycle all the time. I upgraded to the MM175 hoping to increase my duty cycle but it was actually worse. It was at that point that I gave up on having a "portable capable" MIG and a went to the 252. BEST thing I ever did.  Anyway on to the bottom boxes. The big problem with a wide short drawer like this is that they like to bind side to side. Deep narrow drawers work a lot better. I finally managed to get these to work fairly smoothly but it took some die lube to get the final bit of binding out. Reply:Very cool!I noticed in the first pic that it's tapered on the inside..Now looking at the box on the truck I know why..Nice place for the bogey wheels..What kind of truck is it?...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Nice job on the compartments! It's amazing how much work goes into just building a small 'box'.  I like the dollie compartments to keep them off the deck and the recessed underreach fork compartment to keep things low and uncluttered.I used to run a Kenworth with a Holmes 750 that I installed a Zacklift underreach on and made fork mounts that were on the deck but the bed on a 750 is a bit tall to be recessing a fork compartment.Again - nice work.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
