Hello, I am wondering what people wear for welding? Ideally, you would put on a leather welding apron or leather "welding jacket". Are these specially made in some way for welding (treated with chemical?)? What would happen if you put on one of those ordinary suede leather jacket that you no longer use? Would it be adequate to wear for welding?
Reply:Personally myself, no overhead. I just wear long sleeve cotton shirts. Sure they get all burnt up and holes everywhere. But I'm tired of all the scaps I now have, lol I save the apron for fabby up and grinding. but lately, myself was wondering about them. I've been eyeballing this: http://store.cyberweld.com/tiwejaonblco.htmleasy to take on and off.
Reply:Proper Welding Jackets are Chromium Tanned.I use Cape Sleeves and a 34" bib that snaps onto the bottom of the sleeves if I need it.I wouldn't recommend using suede jackets, but give it a whirl and let us know how it goes.Later,Jason
Reply:What matters is that it doesn't catch on fire or produce anything noxious when slag heats it up. Cotton is pretty good -- and it's going to be getting warmer, soon. Leather is nice when it's cold.Jack OlsenMy garage website
Reply:as most "normal" street wear jackets like you are speaking of such as suede and leather also come lined with nylon i would stay away from the idea....unless you like dripping, melting, burning materials encapsulating you inside a leathery outer shell....personally i wear a cape/bib 75% of the time as well as full leather jackets (15%) and for times when i know i wont be doing much overhead i have a few green welding jackets (10%)

Reply:For most of my welding I wear a hobart cotton jacket (was only about $20 at TSC) that buttons nicely and has no pockets to catch slag. I have a leather apron that I wear when grinding with the wire wheel and a full leather jacket for overhead and vertical work.Hobart LX235Victor 250 Oxy-Acetylene Rig (welding and cutting)Bobcat 773F-350, 1999, 4x4, 16' 10K# trailerOutdoor Wood Burner - 10 cords/year
Reply:Cotton jacket for most everything... I wore a leather burn jacket through the first part of school, that was hot as hell and sucked. I'm going to be picking up leather sleeves when I go back in the fall for doing SMAW and FCAW.Miller Performance AD Helmet - Camo Edition Soon to have: Jackson HSL 100 - Forest Digi CamoMiller Thunderbolt AC/DC((Currently at welding school))

Reply:Buy a cotton 'welding jacket' and a leather 'welding jacket'. Done.Hot weather- wear the cotton jacket.Cold weather - wear the leather jacket.Hot weather but don't want hot molten slag or metal dripping on you because you are welding overhead or such - wear the leather jacket and take lots of water breaks. Reply:I'm lucky. I use my old flight suits when they wear out. They make great "cover alls" for all sorts of dirty jobs, like working on the truck. Let alone they make great "cool weather" welding outfits. Although they won't catch on fire because they are Nomex, if welding overhead they suck because it still burns you with hot molton slag/sparks.. Nothing beats leather in the case of overhead welding. But...... leather can be hot and sweaty during the rough months!Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller 625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita Baileigh NRA Life Member
Reply:I wear leather to protect my tattoos. Cotton doesn't help as much with the big globs. |
