Hello all,I am figuring out an estimate for a project I may be getting.  It is for fabricating an oven for a Middle Eastern bakery.  Part of the project calls for building the actual firebox.  It will be made of 1/8" plate inside.  I have never had to hand band a plate before but know there are ways it can be done that come to my mind.  However rather than reinvent the wheel I would like to try proven methods to do so.One that comes to me is the make a jig out of wood with a tighter radius than I need and weld some eye pads on either end of it and pull it with a come alone at a fixed point on my steel table.  This should bend it gently and I could pull it gradually until I get the radius I need.  However there are logistical issues involved with this approach such as the plate will be around 48" x 48" square.  I would have to pull it in the middle somehow to pull it off.  So there is some inventing I have to figure out.  See what I mean?  Anyone done this before using no power tools, brake, bender, etc.?What do you think?Any thoughts, advice is appreciated.Tony
Reply:Considering the time, effort, and lost production in the event of a failure to accomplish this task without the proper equipment, just take the plates requiring bends in them to an appropriate shop, and have them do this part of your project for you. Your customer will appreciate the professional look of your work!Bgbkwndo.
Reply:Have the plate rolled at the fabricating shop.  Usually your supplier or others have the proper rolling machines."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Hello fellas (and any ladies present),thanks for your feedback.  That's good enough for me.  I'll call around and see who can roll the radius. Thanks,Tony
Reply:I had to curve a sheet of 1/8" 6061 t6 and it winded up being a real pita. I winded making a jig that I had to park a car on for a few thousand pounds of pressure, and then used really long steel beams for leverage, not the most practical way but did the job. I'll agree unless your going to be doing this often may be better to just have it bent for youmiller 330a bp TIGmiller dynasty 200DX TIGmillermatic 185 MIGthermal dynamics cutmaster 101 plasma cuttersnap-on YA5550 plasma cutterhypertherm powermax 30 plasma cutterbaileigh CS225 cold sawetc....
Reply:Hello all,the client bowed out of the project when I told him what it would cost ($2600 including materials).   I found a shop that would put the radius on the plate for me for $20.  Can't beat that!!!Oh well.......life goes on.Thanks,Tony
