Reply:That was a good  vid LugweldI want a dozen of those coupons for practice weld it like you own it
Reply:I am not arrogant enough to place myself in the same class as those individuals, but I was a little suprized by all the fuss over the "Advanced Plate Weld".  I viewed the video twice but it was not explained very well.  Must be nice to be able to use a grinder too.It is similiar to one of the welds we have to do up here to qualify for our Journeyman Ticket.3G GTAW Root, 7018 Fill & Cap No Backing.Basic Materials:Two pieces of 3/8" x 6" flat bar 4" long.  Each piece has a 30° bevel on the long (6") side to make a 60° included angle groove.Preparation for the weld:1) Root Land is ground on a bench grinder.2) Edges are touched up with a file.3) Mill Scale removed with a file.4) Coupons laid bevel side down, gap is established, and coupons are tacked on ends from backside with GTAW.5) Excessive tacks may be feathered by using a hand saw.6) Coupon is then tacked to welding fixture.7) Coupon is then oriented in the Vertical (3G) position, and must remain here (for chipping and brushing) until cap pass is finished.Any violation of above means you are disqualified, your test is over, and you are asked to leave. When the coupon is welded out, take it to the Radiograph (fancy name for Oxy-Acetylene torch on a motorized cart) and cut coupon in half.Coupons are marked by welder # and weld position. One coupon is Root Bent.Other coupon is Face Bent.Any surface defects in excess of 1/8" in any direction - Failure.Later,Jason

Reply:The World Skill's Championship 2007 competitors welded an open root with a landing, vertical  vee groove butt joint in plate with tig and stick. They also welded a 1,000 psi pressure vessel that must hold that pressure for 60 seconds. The vessel is welded using tig, mig, stick and fluxcore. That is the best I could gather, didn't follow the chaps English though! "No, sorry, didn't understand a word." Here is more from recent events. http://www.cwa-acs.org/press_release...orldSkills.pdfCity of L.A. Reply:My son is in vocational school taking welding.  He enters his first competition soon. He has to cope and weld together angle iron and do a 45* corner.  All with a torch and I don't know what welder yet.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:I doubt there were any serious failures. These guys get an unparalleled amount of practice, and they are incredible at it for that reason. I have seen some of the local competitions, and a national one. The results are very good indeed. There is a ton of dedication involved. The 2009 World Skills is in Calgary where I work, and helped out by the tech school I instruct at. I am sure it is going to be quite an experience. Supposedly, there will be more people in this city than during the Calgary Stampede, and just slightly less than the number of people that were here for the 1988 Winter Olympics!!!
Reply:Yeah the "Advanced Plate Weld"  Looks just like what I had to do at school. An open root weld with a 60 degree included angle, Toss the root in with tig, fill and cap with 18's then take it cut cupons and bend them.  I thought it was rather easy and found that particular weld to be harder to make using stick for the root vs tig.Last edited by Newfie_1986; 01-21-2009 at 02:23 PM.
Reply:ive competed in the 2004-2005 Canadian National skills competition (high school). And took gold both times. My college is now sending me to the 09 Skills competition, and i believe this year the nationals are in Charlotte Town PEI. Which would be a nice trip, this will be my last crack at her ever so i guess well see how shes goes!

Reply:1000 psi and it has flat sides!!!  I thought that was odd.  I guess they want to really test the welds when the thing balloons.  I didn't notice the thickness though.Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE
Reply:Looks like at least 3/8", maybe even 1/2". Over such a small span, that's plenty.
Reply:Just thought I'd send this along.  It's a mock-up of the type of joint that boilermaker welders have to be proficient at to work in powerhouses.  About 90% of the work involves replacing one or more tubes in a wall or hanging element.  The tubes range from roughly 1.5" to 3.5" o.d. with wall thickness of .100" to .250".  The edge space between tubes is usually .5".  Procedure is mostly tig all the way but sometimes low-hi cap on heavier wall.  Welds would be done with one welder on each side of the wall and his side documented as his own.  Most boiler designs call for 100% x-ray, some only 10%.  As if this joint isn't complicated enough, try to picture doing it two inches off the floor while laying on your side.  Also because of uncontrollable circumstances the gap could be from a hairline crack to 3/16".  Also because the inside of boilers always have to ventilated for safety reasons, there can be quite a breeze at the joint.  Your partner has to 'back you up' to prevent the draft.   Porasity at the tangent (tube edge) can be a nightmare to repair.  These welds also have to be made in the 5G position for roof and floor tubes. Reply:I can attest to all that OldSparks has submitted here. As a Boilermaker, also from British Columbia, I have done a few of these welds through the years. There has been more than one occasion, while jammed into some tight spot, that you wish whoever designed this was made to perform a demo weld! I tried to find a contact for OldSparks, but none offered. Drop me a P.M.Bgbkwndo.
Reply:So we have another westerner with time on his hands.  I was set-up for running a few coupons in the garage so I took the above pics.  Thought it was a good example of what comes after a 6g butt.  ....pm service should be up....
Reply:Great video.  I'm surprised no one noticed the EXTREMELY dangerous grinding of the root pass.  Guy actually stuck the wheel through to plates.  Guess he's never had one "kick back" and take a hunk out of his body.I have never witnessed it, but I've heard of someone good enough with TIG to weld aluminum foil together.
Reply:Running the grinding wheel through the "gap", be it plate or pipe, is a very common practice, and I'm sure it's done by all presure welders. Most folks that do this type of welding are fully trained journeymen [journey-persons these days] and the only thing that is a little on the dangerous side of this practice, is the removing of the guard that covers a portion of the grinding disc.Regards,  Bgbkwndo.

Reply:I have not made it down to tin foil thickness yet.. but I weld .032 and .040, .050 daily...  Not sure of the thickenss of tin foil.. I'd imagine it is .015 or something close to it...   Don't even think my machine can weld that low of a setting...  I think 30 is as low as mine goes...
