We had to remove the old kelly box and replace it with a smaller one for this paticular rig. The box is made of 1" T1 plate that we cut on our CNC plasma. The metal was preheated to 300 degrees and welded out with about 50 lbs of 11018 rod. There were some wings made for it as well so he could make a wider hole (forgot to take pictures of those). You can see the holes in the plate where the wings attach. Attached ImagesCommon sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
Reply:That looks pretty scary. What size hole does it drill?
Reply:i want to see the size of the bottle of wine that this thing opens
Reply:is that for drilling into limestone or some other rock like substance?
Reply:I'll bet that thing takes some horses to turn. What a bit !!"The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
Reply:Yeah, it's a rock bit. It drills a 56" hole. He can go up to 60' deep. And I think he told me he's running about 200,000 lbs of torque.. And his rig is considered a smaller one in the field.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
Reply:The Co. I work for has similar Augers. I think the biggest one is 48"I've done similar jobs on some of our Augers. Looks like you did a good job on that on dude!
Reply:Very impressive. Is the weave pattern around the outside of the helix some kind of hardfacing?
Reply:Yeah it is. You can tell that they put it on after the wear on the wings happened.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
Reply:Kind of on the same subject; How do they manufacture augers?I know the big ones like yours are semicircles of plate, welded together and stretched. But the smaller ones like grain augers are made from a continuous piece of steel. How do they get it to curlique?tractor, loader.dozer, backhoe, and all the tools to keep em movin
