I did a bit of s.s. work this week..  One of the jobs was modifying some Y's.  I ended up running about 20cfm through them then welded them from the outside at about 30 amps.  Another job was to splice a few pipes and weld tri-clovers to them.  I was able to access the inside of the pipes so there was no need for a purge.  This would have been a great job for a positioner, which I dont have. I ran those welds at about 20 amps. Attached ImagesCommon sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.

Reply:The large ones are for overhead transfer of product from one kettle to another.  The Y's are for filling baby food jars.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
Reply:Hi Brainfarth, nice job. i,ve done a lot of this s,s. tube work. was wondering why you didn,t use 45,s on the y piece? For the welding, Ideally 40 to 45 amps with purge and outside welded only (walk it in if you can) in one pass only. And check inside for full peno afterwards. I have made a reflux still, sorry no pic. It was made of 316 stainless and is fully santianry welded. http://www.google.com.au/images?hl=e...ed=0CD0QsAQwAwreflux still images
Reply:positioner??w do that kinda work in the field all the time ..nice job tho..brush em down theyll look good...full purge inside i hope or they wont be much good in food processing..specially babyfoods..one tiny imperfection inside will scrap theose parts...
Reply:I couldn't use 45's because he wanted the tri-clovers to be exactly 1" from each other.  The insides came out pretty smooth.  I do this in the field from time to time, which is a pain since I dont have all mu convient shop equipment for nice fitups.  I was talking to a guy that made liquor and he later told me that they didnt have to meet the same codes that food had to run in.  I did a heat exchanger for him once and a tank(which I did back purge).  The exchanger was a fun job.  http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=15250Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
