http://www.schwinnbikes.com/paramoun...ery/index.htmlI really liked the construction gallery.  They use a lot fo flux, why so much?
Reply:I think the pictures showing the tubes coated with foam were taken when the soldering was being done, and the white 'foam' was to keep the rest of the tubes cool.

Reply:one of my favorite bikes, titanium lugs. http://bgcycles.com/NAHBS.html bike is actually glued together due to the titanium lugs.
Reply:That's a cool bike, but what does "lugged" mean? It's not what you can buy, it's what you can build.

Reply:the unpainted part is the lug.the debate is still on-going on the strength and flexibility of weld vs lug within the bicycle application.pro-lug camp says while the weld is strong, the areas around the weld is weakened/brittle by heat.pro-weld camp says its difficult to tell if the space between tube and lug is COMPLETELY filled.my opinion is that if a frame is damaged anywhere around the weld, its because it was a poor weld, if a lug failed, the lug was poorly brazed.  everybody makes a booboo every once in a while.  even master welders/brazers make one, given enough time. Reply:interestingly, lug technology, although, considered more "ancient" can be used on other non-metal materials.  for example, i have a carbon fiber bicycle frame made by Look, and its lugged.  instead of brazing (fill with silver/brass/lead), they fill the space between the tube and the lug with epoxy.unfortunately, my bike is painted, and all the example i can find in higher resolution is painted, but you can tell from the picture that at least the bottom bracket (where the cranks will be installed) is a lug joining the down tube, seat tube and the chain stays.i believe they used lugs for carbon fiber because, back then, they couldn't make an entire frame out of one continuous piece of carbon fiber... now they can, and a lot of high end carbon fiber bikes have no more lugs.anyway, back on topic.  us crazy cyclists are sentimentalists (suckers) for "vintage" or "vintage-looking" bicycles because it reminds us of our first bikes. Reply:Originally Posted by Oldiron2The pictures I'm referring to  had  what looked like foam on the tubes, well away from the lugs and joints. I'm familiar with brazing and the flux used for it, and that wasn't what I saw. 'Course, there may have been other shots I didn't see which did show the flux.I understand that the Reynolds company doesn't (or didn't use to) sell tubing to just anybody; they require(d) some proof that the user knows about the proper soldering/brazing of their products.  I believe that information came directly from Reynolds to an acquaintance who builds bikes.

Reply:I was in a bike shop today, pitching my kayak/bike trailers.  I can't believe the bike they have out now.  WoW!  I had my eye on a really cool tadpole style recumbent.  But, I'd have to sell a kidney to pay for it.  Good news is that the shop owner is interested in becoming a dealer for my trailers! It's not what you can buy, it's what you can build.
Reply:I found the same thing when I went looking for a 'bent' bike. Found a cheap alternative though, which is what eventually led me to this welding forum! http://www.atomiczombie.com/?tx=0138...=&item_number=

Reply:Take a look at this Frames Buider's webpage!!!  http://www.strongframes.com/ he run a AMAZING (GTAW) beads.
Reply:Carl Strong's site is a great resource.  Some good information about sequencing and alignment during weld up. There is a lot of history and pictures made available. It's eye opening to read about how many different phases and sizes the business went through. A good read for the large number of aspiring frame builders out there thinking it's easy.
