Material costs

looking to buy some square hot rolled tubing for a table. Someone piped in and told me that onlinemetals.com was kind of a rip...so what should I be paying for something like2x2 1/8 thick2x2 3/18 thickI called my local metal place and they only carry stainless, so Im going to have to find another place. Reply:I recently purchased a couple of sticks (24' lengths) of 2x2x11 gauge for $36.72 per stick.  This is $.50 per pound.I wouldn't purchase metal online unless it was my only option.  Local pick up should be a billion times cheaper (well maybe not a billion).   A single stick (24' long) of 2x2x11 gauge weighs 73.2 lbs.  Shipping costs are probably enormous (just guessing).Look around some more.

Reply:BlauSchuh,HOLY SMOKES BATMAN!  I can get a 24' stick of 3x3x11 gauge for $57.19.1 cut (usually in1/2) to make transport easier is FREE.I couldn't afford to weld at the price you quoted.  WOW!

Reply:Go to your local welding supply store and ask them....if they don't know where to get the steel your looking for in your area no one will.  Wouldn't hurt the cause if you bought a little something either. That's what I did and I couldn't be happier with the place they suggested. Price is price.  Sure I could maybe drive 20/30 miles out of my way for maybe a little cheaper price but unless you're going to be doing high volume stuff I doubt you'll save anything worth the time and drive.Just my 2 cents...good luck to ya.

Reply:I shop at Discount Steel in Ft Worth, they also have a webpage with prices but the prices in person are a little cheaper.I just bought some "drop" for .45 per lb.They have a lot of drop and I can usually find what I'm looking for.You can check them out at discountsteel.com

Reply:Everybody should be converting their prices to $/lb.  Then you have a common value to compare.   Understanding, of course, that lighter dimensions will usually cost more.

Reply:If I was you and was looking to get a good price try finding a local manufacturing shop in your area and see if you can order through them. Places like that get a great discount because they order in bulk and sometimes they have material laying around that is not needed and you can get it for alittle more then scrap price. Reply:I was just at the metal supply place on thursday and if i remember right the prices were:2x2x20 .065 $20 something2x2x20 .120 $322x2x20 .188 $65And for sheet 3/16" was .50/lb.  I got a 5x8 sheet sheered  into 5 pieces for ~$150.  Normal price to sheer is $10 a cut or $60/hr but i think they either forgot to charge me or were just being nice since they couldnt cut it the first time i came.Last edited by ggarner; 07-17-2010 at 03:10 AM.
