Things are slow here so I'll post my plain jane tank stand I did the other day. I ended up with a 15 gallon drum so I've been using it for a gasoline tank because it's small enough for me to muscle around and I'm tired of having several plastic cans setting out in the sun. It's about 38" high at the bottom of the saddle so it gives about a long foot of drop for filling the mower. Inch and a half angle iron with some odds and ends thrown in. The original plan was to do the typical X braces on all four sides but after I threw in the 1 inch by 1/4 inch straps around the middle area it came up ridged enough. The X straps would give it that nice windmill/tower look but with the heat and all I burnt out. Still need a new fuel valve. The one that's in there is the oil despensing type and drissles a little in the off position. Should have got a pics of it on the ground to show it relative to everything else but didn't get to it. Reply:Hey Sam, I rolled them with my home spun roller. There were two rings originally for one of my hair brained projects that didn't work out so I took one, cut it in half, re-rolled it a bit to tighten up the curve. Had to cut some off. It's some 2" by 1/2" channel 3/16ths" thick. Don't recall what the per pound is. I have had quite a bit of that size available over the years for free. Reply:Interesting little project. And nice job on the rolled channel. Holding up 15 gallons (about 100 lbs) of gasoline shouldn't be any problem on that stand.Did you use seismic-rated filler for the welds, seeing as you -are- in California and all? re: valve Maybe just a little fuel-line shut-off valve, being as you need a valve to shut off the fuel in a fuel line? A little paint to make it look all nice and such, then you have to work on the fuel-spill containment enclosure pad to meet environmental regs, eh? The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...

Reply:This is a project that I need to build. What kind of tank are you going to be able to use? I've got access to 33 gallon drums here for $10 each that were used to transport apple juice. Looks like the inside might be epoxy coated. I'd need to do a test and see if it softens up over time.ChrisLincoln Pro Mig 180TMiller Spectrum 375

Reply:I'll have to get pics of that roller. I looked and don't have any. Have to take the compressor and blow some of the heavy stuff off. ."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt

Reply:HiAs a tool whore I want to see the roller pictures tooooo. Not nice to teas us with pictures of channel hoops and not show how you made them.Don't forget to have the end of you filler hose stored above the top of the tank in case the valve leaks.have funTom
Reply:Good idea for the tank stand.A suggestion for the 1 inch strap in the center, I think that would be a good place to add a piece of expanded to set oil bottles for the different equipment. Should always check the oil at each fill and not having to run back to the shop for a quart saves time and leg work. Reply:Very nice work. I wanted to do the same think for a water tank for the girls 4H pigs, but cheaped out and went with a couple of Simons forms for the legs and just made up some flat cross bars.I've had good luck with ball valves with Diesel. One thing, you need to use something like Gasoila on the threads not teflon tape. Gasoila is a pipe compound designed for petroleum and it wont break down and weap like tef tape. Learned this the hard way on our diesel transfer tanks and gas pump. The one gravity tank we had originally just had standard fuel hose and a ball valve with 45 and nipple, but we changed it to a manual fuel nozel we picked up with one of our transfer pumps. If you want to get real slick, a couple of flat faced quick connectors for hydraulics will let you easily remove the hose assembly. They are less likely to leak than the standard QD's. Buddy's got the transfer tank in his service truck plumbed that way. Hose stays coiled in the box, and he just plugs them in when needed. That way they aren't in his way in the back all the time. Also he's set up so he can fuel from either side of the truck depending on what side he plugs into, rather than only one side like mine is.
