Can't claim much credit for this one, I had the general idea, one of our truck drivers got all the pieces, our TIG guy welded it, I just did the fit up. Grip handles are actually aluminum pipe handrail splice inserts. Zip line is 330' long over a pond, very cool! Attached Images

Reply:looks great  but do you trust it ? i use to work on a drilling rig and our Geronimo line had a pulley and  break on it to slow us down. we would get some speed going down it from the derrick man basket.Lincoln Power Arc 4000 Thermal Arc Fabricator 252 iThermal arc 186Thermal Arc 26 tigTweeko 200 amp spool gunHobart AirForce 400WP-17V-12R

Reply:330+ feet of relatively thick cable sure aint cheap! If the handle is using a solid aluminum bar (looks like about 1 inch square, yes?), then maybe OK on the strength. If it is hollow square tube, then STOP!  NG! Not Safe!  And what's with the weird shadow/whatever on the bottom of the right side handle?  It almost looks like the round handle part is chopped or grooved and no longer fully round.  The best laid schemes ... Reply:Bar is 3/4" solid aluminum that goes through a square hole I punched in the hanger plate, can't even start to bend it with my 215lbs on it.  Video is on my facebook page, I'll try and link it.http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=1269336468475  The handles are round pipe inserts missing about 1/2", you squeeze them to fit inside 1 1/4" pipe.  The other end is attached to another tree the same way about 15" off the ground.  The cable runs through hole drilled in a tire held in place by a cable clamp backed up with a washer about 8" from shore.  Even with the cable tensioned for max speed with me on it, I still stop about 10" short of the tire, 1/2 of the way across the pond you start to go uphill. Reply:I'd love to see picts of the other end as well if posible. I've got a customer who asked earlier this year if I thought I could build one for them and I'd love to see what you came up with..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:OK.....I really did not expect the group of 20 somethings to hang 4 people off the tee handle!  Total weight was  over 600lbs and they were bouncing so that the last guy to let go would get launched up like a slingshot!  ( happened to be a girl standing on a guy's shoulders)  There is a video I'm trying to get of this event!  They want me to make a double tee handle so they can fit more people on at once!  I'm thinking they won't be satisfied until someone breaks their neck!  They already moved the starting height up 8 feet to get more speed. Reply:Bent aluminum handle = material failure.Replace it with something beefier.Cause most aluminum alloys have a -much- lower 'spread' between material yield (bending) and material failure than steels.  So once you get yielding/bending, you are too close to failure for design comfort.Make it idiot proof and only idiots will use it.  More seriously, you NEED to make it stronger and beefier to handle the idiots doing idiot things.  Especially if any of them could EVER say "Hey, hold my beer and watch this".  Cause if they break the handle or any other part that -you- made or designed and someone gets hurt, then YOU are on the line, liability-wise.Now that you -know- they are going to do and did and will continue to do overloading and idiotic stuff, you NEED to beef up that design.  Besides, man-rated lifting/support design safety factor is usually 5x or sometimes even 10x.Yeah, I think you'll have to go to stainless steel and a bigger and stronger design.  The best laid schemes ... Reply:I suppose I could have our in house engineer come up with something, but if I keep upgrading the weakest link, sooner or later the trees will uproot!  I think it's time Mr. Goodenough puts a stop to this madness!  Kids are starting to show up at this pond from all over the countryside, liability is becoming a concern.  On the other hand....what about rocket propulsion?
