Hey new to your site, been lookin around, lots of good ideas. I just made me a new welding table/ framing jig and have a little problem. The 1/4" plate that I used for the top was given to me and I welded it on to the frame on the bottom side so it wasn't readily aware to me at the time that it has a swell of about 1/8" in the middle of it about 2/3 of the way down one end. I was told by an old fella that I could heat the offending area with a rose bud tip till it started to glow and pour water over it to instantly quench it and the swell would shrink back out of it. Does this sound correct to ya'll and if not is there any way to get it out. I have drilled the surface every 3" with 3/8 holes for machine hold downs and really don't want to have to ditch it and start again. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Pete
Reply:Hmmm, saw a guy do it once with an old VERY wet Beach Towel. He folded in twice, soaked it with a hose and then did exactly what you are proposing..... In this case, the 'Warp' was 'right in the middle' of the table, so he heated it with the Propane 'weed burner' and then threw the sopping wet towel like a big square Pancake, directly onto the surface! Anyway, he had to do it twice and from what I heard, the table came out VERY true and flat.Cheers,Miller Diversion 165120 amp Buzz BoxVictor Oxy/Ace Oxy/LPGSmith "Little" Oxy/LPGHypertherm Powermax 30Lot's of Misc. tools n' crap....
Reply:That advice is correct, here is a post concerning peening vs shrinking here; http://weldingweb.com/showpost.php?p...2&postcount=40Matt
Reply:Pvanheck it can be done, FarmerSamm here does it a bunch. Take a look at these.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=27737http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=28433You might also be able to weld a bead on the back side and shrink it as well. Another Example of Samm's work.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=24640Here's one other thread that may have some info for you.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=41867Both these tricks are often more art than skill. Go slow, it's easier to make small adjustments than try and do it all at once and make it worse. Good luck..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Thanks Guys, I believe like ya'll that it is better to do it in small steps. I started to work it down with the back side of an axe head but I am afraid that it is going to ripple it up. When the heat breaks a little around here I think I will try some heat and a wet towel, I'll keep ya'll posted with the results. Thanks again Pete |
