I have a chance to get a Lincoln Tombstone 225A AC welder for about $75.00.Wondering which rods to get to start with.  I'm thinking I need some 6011 & 7011 to start with.  Or 6013 & 7013.  Which ones would be best to start re-learning stick welding?Wish it was an AC/DC model, I've been reading the DC stick welding is sweet to run. Thanks guys for any info.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
Reply:6011, 6013 and 7014 work well with AC.  There is also a 7018 AC available.6011 penetrates, isn't fussy about contamination (clean metal as best you can though) and has little slag.6013 builds and fills fast, but I find it has an annoying amount of slag.  Both are good rods to start out with.7018's pretty much my favorite for fabrication and welding out of flat position.  On some welding equipment it has an annoying tendency to stick when you first strike the arc.  Can be frustrating for a beginner.I'd start out with some 6011 and 6013 and get the hang of it.
Reply:I vote 6013. that's what I learned on.
Reply:My experience is mostly with DC, I very rarely do anything with AC and stick, so my views might be a little skewed, but...I vote 6013 or 7014 to learn on.  Yeah the slag is heavy, black and naughty, unlike the light, flakey slag of 6010/6011 and 7018, but both are drag rods so no whipping and pausing to contend with (6010/6011) while learning and no damp storage to contend with (7018) either.  Once you learn 6013, 6011 is easy once you get the hang of whipping and pausing (or doing small circles).  Same with 7018, once you learn 7014, 7018 is like driving a Caddillac and the slag peels right off, on DC anyways.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:"Damp storage"????You do realize I live in Yuma AZ, don'tcha?  Middle of the monsoon season downpour, humidity is only about 20%.I wish this was a DC one too.  I've welded with AC stick (looooong time ago) & got good at it then.  I understand the techniques of the whip & small circles with the electrode too.  I haven't heard back from the guy yet, so this may be just wishful thinking anyway.  I think I'll concentrate on the 6013 & 7018 if I can get this welder.  If not, I'll keep watching & pick up what I need at that time. Thanks guysMarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build

Reply:Buy the machine.  They're good, and versatile.Do the learning thing with 6011, and 6013.  6013 is forgiving, and allows you to concentrate on making a nice bead.  6011 penetrates more, and allows you to learn how to control speed and arc length.I think you'll love it.  It opens up a whole new world of working with different size rods, and different thickness materials.  And it's relatively cheap to play with."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:You might have a fit getting 7018 to run with that machine. when a needed stick to 7018AC. 6011, 6013 and 7014 will run  just fine.Tough as nails and damn near as smart
Reply:I didn't notice  your location.  I lived in Phoenix for about a decade too.  It is indeed very dry there.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Well, heck, with your username, I figured you was one of us.Today we had wind, cool temps & dust storms.  Humidity went all the way up to 35%.  Problem was, it wasn't enough to settle the dust.  Couldn't see over a mile away from all the dust. And I was just funnin anyway.  Honestly, I don't think I'll have too much of a problem with damp rods, but if I keep the stick machine, or trade up to help my son get into business, I'll prolly find a rod oven that could be run off a gen set.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
Reply:It was pretty nice here today, windy but nice.  We had alot of rain yesterday.  Here by the ocean, there's always water in the air.  Truck is wet most every morning from the dew.I've always thought that it would be great if rod ovens were made to run on propane, like a propane water heater or furnace in an RV.  Would be alot better than running the genset continuously to keep the rod oven going.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
