hi every one, the case that , some guy say to me that cap pass or passes in pipeline welding isn't important , so there is no need to inspect the cap with any NDT as UT, and that the root is just the important pass of welding which should be inspected, Is that true or what? and is there any talking in codes about this matter, I'm waiting for your answers, thank you in advance.
Reply:The cap pass is important because undercuts and lack-of-fusion can act as stress concentrators and therefore crack initiation points. However you're correct that the root pass is more important than the cap pass.
Reply:Root, hot, and cap pass are all equally important. My reasoning is that if you leave out one of the three it will not pass ANY inspection and you get to cut it out and do it again. There is also plenty of pipe out there welded with no root pass, or no cap and holding up just fine under pressure.
Reply:No, the cap pass isnt important, every pipeline company for the past 80 years has just been paying people to inspect caps and welders to go back and make repairs on them out of pure boredom. And now some guy has cracked the cap pass conspiracy and its only a matter of time before the whole mechanical piping industry switches to a welding procedure that uses only a stacked series of quality controlled root passes on their piping systems.Local 597

Reply:remember that the root is the bottom of the cap...
Reply:Does your roof need shingles on it? Sure, it is structurally sound without them but a bad section of shingles will lead to the decking rotting out, and the roof leaking, and eventually failing altogether.Yes, the cover pass is important.
Reply:The cap is the most important because if it looks good enough the inspector may overlook the rest of the weld?
Reply:thank you everybody for your attention, so there is two opinions , first one says that the cap pass is important and therefore must be inspected , and the other one says that the cap pass isn't important and all money spended for cap passes are lost ( as my understanding) , so is there any other opinions or other talking about the topic I will be happy to hear it. thank you in advance
Reply:The weld has to be as strong as the pipe, leave any pass out and the joint will be weaker than the pipe and stressed. It's as simple as that.Leo
