How do I measure this weld to see if it meets the spec called out on the plans? Attached ImagesIan TannerKawasaki KX450 and many other fine tools
Reply:The flare bevel is a natural prep.  Since the wall thickness is 3/8 inch it is likely that if the end cut is square you already have a preparation that is 3/8 inch deep.  With the weld flush and no undercut then you are assured that you have at least a 1/4 inch of weld.  This is a tender trap however when you encounter larger tubes such as 6 inch square and 3/8 wall.  In most cases a backing bar is required so that the flare bevel is not an open root.  With the backing bar the flare bevel is not open root and usually is allowed under prequalified joints that are described in the code.
