I think people called them "Hoosier Poles"?  Anyway, after working out in that field on the fence, I decided the next day I would steal my wife's patio umbrella.  Worked go except for that it was too short, and every time I moved the truck along the fence I would have to drag the heavy stand with it.I took some EMT tube and found another length that would fit inside.  I fishmouthed the inner tube for the umbrella sleeve.  I drilled some holes and welded on some nuts.  It works.  The tube goes the length across the bed so I can pull the inner tube and put it on the other side if I need to.  It will extend almost 6 feet.  Now I need to find an umbrella that is not so "girly"  You can see in the first picture the cast iron umbrella stand (in front of the fan.)Any suggestions on umbrellas? Reply:Good thinking(patio umbrellas, fans............. what's next?)Umbrella looks fine.  It keeps the sun offa your head.  If it's prone to be real windy, the mesh umbrellas work good, but don't keep the full sun off of you, it's a tradeoff."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Nice job. as far as a less "girly" umbrella try one of those old satellite dishes that are six or seven feet across. My mother in law has one I'm re-purposing for her.
Reply:Check out your local tractor supply outfit.  They sell tractor umbrella's, or pick one out at the local Walmart.  The Wally world ones are pretty flimsy though.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
Reply:Needs a drink holder on the umbrella.
Reply:Dang!  Now I have to pull out the welder again...
Reply:Here's what we use. Spendy as the dickens, and of course we don't pay for them so that helps. If you buy your own you'd have to really think hard about shelling out the cash. One will last for several years before they start getting real rigid and brittle. They come with about a three foot pole and them you buy extensions four foot at a time, wood or fiberglass or a combo of both. The ends are compatible. Part of the high cost is in the dielectric properties we are required to have that you wouldn't need with most other work. Just something to look at. http://www.gmptools.com/nf/catalog/cat07_p152-153.pdf

Reply:you could always make your own.  thats what we did, with the same kind of setup as yours, but to go around the outside edge of our old four wheeling trailer.  had 3 umbrellas on either side.  i didnt actually sew them, but they were nice when they were done.  lasted forever too until the rats got to them several years later.
Reply:I do a lot of surveying and can spend hours standing next to an electronic instrument that costs more than a new car.  I've found a retractable awning, especially in this very wet climate to be very handy.     It's about a 7 foot long by 6 foot wide awning when open, but when retracted folds into about a 4"x4" box on the side of my canopy.  And it only takes about 30 seconds of cranking and it's completely unfurled.  I've used it in high winds and heavy rain and it works great.  I just went out and checked my truck and it's made by a company called Horizon.    I can take photos if anyone is interested in seeing it.Lincoln AC225 & MigPak 140, Lincoln Magnum SpoolGun, Miller Spectrum 375-X Plasma, Syncrowave 200 TIG, Millermatic 252 MIG, Miller Digital Elite, General 7x12" horiz/vert bandsaw, 3' box/pan brake, 20 ton press, milling machine, 12x28 lathe, etc.
Reply:The umbrella holder you've made is really usable and fitted to bring anywhere. I do admire the people who are concern on inventing that kind of holder. And there's a lot of benefit on it too. The clamp 'n Stake beach umbrella holder has even more features,  secure stake into grass, dirt and compact soil  . A indoor Umbrella holder is perfect solution to protect a carpeted, hardwood or similar exposed floor area from a pool of water, drips or similar such water damage that can soon develop  an attractive stand soon puts way to water spots. And also the advantages of offset round umbrella that is perfect for over a spa or hot tub. These are only some of the things that can help us.
