I don't Mig weld but a friend with a Miller XP130 which he uses to do stock car cages recently switched from .035 flux core to solid .030 with gas 75-25 argon c02 welding .095 wall non cromoly He said it did fine with flux core but no penetration with the gas and solid wire even with the machine maxed out Thanks
Reply:Tell him to reverse the polarity of the gun!It should have how to in his instruction manual, if he does not have a manual, he can go to the Miller web site and down load a pdf file of one.#1. Reply:Also! Is he trying to weld outdoors with gas shielding, how does he have the gas set to on the regulator, is he trying to weld on metal that has been cleaned by grinding off a spot that is to be welded and a spot for the clamp?#1. Reply:Just called him he said he seems to remember something like that when being told to him when he bought it! Thanks from the both of us. Didnt ask what steel But I think he said not cromoly not DOM so mild ?Last edited by XC204; 04-20-2009 at 01:45 PM.
Reply:Even if that steel is new, it will still need to be cleaned at the weld point, mill scale and oil will keep you from getting good contact, and unlike flux core wire that can even be used on rusty metal, solid wire and gas needs a really clean spot for the weld!#1.
