I've got a Lincoln 180C that I run on a 220 volt 20 amp breaker.  How much power am I losing from running the machine on a 20 amp breaker instead of a 30 amp or higher breaker?
Reply:I think that as long as the breaker holds, and doesn't kick out, your machine is getting the juice it needsAlthough I'm not sure if the lighter circuit is carrying the amps that a heavier one would carry.Well, I argued myself into a corner againSorry"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Thats all I have on my HH180 it has 19.5 Amp draw or so had 12 Ga. on it and finally put 10 Ga. so it holds up better moving around didn't notice a difference.(supposed to be #10 with 30 Amp breaker though for insurance coverage) still welds the same probably not pulling 10 Amps per leg so it's not a high constant draw with these little guys even up all the way with the 12 Ga it never popped the breaker if that helpsLincoln 225 Tombstone,Miller Big 20,Hobart 180,150' Argon,A/D hobart hood 22 Ton Log splitter,79 F350 dump eats 4.75 TONS and still turns cutters, grinders,And a  Hypertherm POWERMAX 30
Reply:If it doesn't trip the breaker you're getting the amperage you need. A breaker is in place to trip only if you exceed said amperage. It doesn't regulate amperage.
Reply:It is not a matter of the size of breaker that determines how much power you are getting it is the actual machine dependent on how much current that it "draws" at full power which will determine which breaker you need. The manufacturer usually states this on the rating plateAlthough there are variables but the machine should be set up to the manufacturers specsie no "300 feet" extension leads etc
Reply:The breaker will be the weakest link.  When it pops, you have reached the limit.  Nothing more to it than that.David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:We are saying the same thing.Techicnally the 20amp breaker will limit you as it will Trip once you run the 180c at a setting that draws more than 20amps.I bet it does draw more than 20amps at some point since the manual recommends a 40amp CB. Lincoln surely tests these unitsIn reality we usually never reach that "setting" so you can probably run the 180c on a 20amp CB for years w/o tripping the breaker.Make sense?Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
