Decided to redo the cat-back on the "race car" and went ahead with a two bend, catless/mufflerless setup.  3" 304SS welded via Chicago Electric Mig (C-25).Let me know what you think!!The money shot:
Reply:The craters left in the spot welds may leak ar create a weak spot( crack ).You should run a continuous bead, not spots.I dont  think SS likes C25.  Usually a tri-mix or small CO2 or O2 mix.The welds on the exhaust look a little on the hot side.
Reply:leaky, leaky then breaky.... you should watch the video of how to not weld toonothing fancy, just a few hot glue guns for metalwww.sicfabrications.com
Reply:As stated above, for stainless, the following gas combinations work well:90% He, 7.5% Ar, 2.5% CO2 Great for short-arc welding of thin materials, in medium to thick materials, lack of fusion and high porosity are common, the He makes it expensive.98% Ar, 2% CO2 Makes a nice fluid weld pool, but it's difficult to weld super thin material.  This is my gas of choice for stainless.98% Ar, 2% O2 We got this as an error once and tried some test plates.  Performance is comparable with the 2% CO2 mix above with slightly lower carbon levels in the weld metal.  This would be acceptable for most applications, if it's what you have, but I wouldn't weld 316 stainless with it.I hope this helps someone on here.Fegenbush
Reply:thats not gonna be good for long

Reply:Originally Posted by BustedsmI barely spent over $40 for all of it, so if it does in fact break it won't be a loss at all.  I sold my other cat-back for 5x that.
Reply:did you use SS filler?
Reply:Part of the reason the weld looks terrible is probably because of the crappy Harbor Freight welder.  My dad bought one of those welders, it was the biggest piece of crap I have ever welded with.*************************************Mike AccardiHenderson, [email protected] 250XLincoln Weldpack HDMiller Syncrowave 180 SD*************************************
Reply:Hey cool car! I recently picked a rally red Evolution X GSR. I had a fully built 04 STi (built motor, gt3071r, coilovers, oz wheels with good rubber, water/meth, etc).I love the do it yourself spirit and we all start somewhere, but you should at least match the wire to material. But its your exhaust, maybe for future projects you could look into a used TIG welder. They aren't very expensive to pick up a used DC tig on CL. And HF anything aint really worth crap.
Reply:If a cheap mig with steel filler and the wrong gas was what you were going to weld it with, it would have been better (and cheaper) to just use galvanized steel pipe instead of stainless tube.  Put some fluxcore self shield wire in your little mig and weld the galvanized with that.It appears you did a nice job fitting the pipes together before welding.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:Thanks for the feed-back guys!  Yes I do realize that welding the ss with this setup was the wrong way, if it breaks it breaks and I'm obviously at fault.  I'm looking at picking up the Miller Diversion 165 here in the next couple months so I can do some REAL welding the RIGHT way.
