Hey all,I've seen some pretty cool tools and such under the "Projects" threads but haven't found a really dedicated thread on the topic of "Modified or Homemade tools".  Have I merely missed it ?Either way, as a NEWBIE, I'd love to see the types of TOOLS (especially modified) you people make (recent or not) and how you use those tools !  (Jigs, Clamp systems, welded vise grips, whatever !)Cheers,/Jman....
Reply:Here ya go!Mostly home made tools though!http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=25351#1. If you don't like what I wrote, or if it offends you, then don't read it!#2. I am living life the way I see fit, if you don't like the way I'M living, tough sh**!
Reply:Here is one for you, a power hacksaw I am making from surplus iron, it is based on the Gingery hacksaw made from wood and iron, copied the measurements.I still have to weld the motor mount in, do the wiring and get the belts, and make the slide for the hacksaw holder.I am going to use 1 inch tubing perforated for adjustment on polyurethane rollers at the back in a 4 inch box section with 1 inch pivot on the frame+bronze bushing, and the hacksaw will run back and forth by sliding 1 inch tubing at the back, don't know if this will work, will find out soon enough? As far as cost I bought the pillow blocks and 12 inch and 10 inch pulleys, the motor is from and old washing machine,sq. tubing from old bar bell bench, legs from Massey 35 Reeels, angle iron from Massey 92 combine, the vise is made from hospital bed crank(the handle attachment was plastic so I made a new one out of 1 inch roll stock). All distances measure up close to wood model but the hacksaw crank sure has me thinking it may be to short? After this a hydraulic tubing bender+30 ton press from the swather hydraulic pump and rams. Reply:Nice !I don't know how you guys come up with this stuff....  I'm lucky if I can figure out how to use the damn vise properly !Man I wish I woulda' had a Dad or a Father Figure to show me cool stuff like that when I was a Kid....  (..can you hear the violins playin' in the background ?)  Cheers,/Jman...
Reply:Anyone have photos of a set of "Third Hands" that they've made for welding and such ?I need to make something like that for a project coming up and the metal is going to be everything from Mild Steel tube, to 1/8" copper plate.Cheers/Jman...
Reply:Seen a homemade hacksaw where guy rigged old brakes & caliper to raise saw with drive cam on back stroke then let it down!I have a small bandsaw, but you cannot argue with the price of blades.Projects are english wheel presses, bending brakes, o/a carts welding tables.Miller has some stuff on their sight.I am thinking down the line at a yoder style stretcher/shrinker also but have to checkout a few auction sales this spring for a lge motor.Otherwise I will buy cheap one from Harbour freight and take a brake pot off a semi remove the handle and use foot operated pedal. What do you mean bu third hand, like a vise you step on and it squeezes and holds work tight.

Reply:Wish I had a photo of it, was pretty ingenious if I may say so myself.I had a 1982 GMC 4x4 with the 6.2 Diesel.  The power steering belts were never tight enough, they always slipped.  One day I changed them to a matched set, but couldn't tighten them.  So I built a "jack" to adjust the tension.Basically it was a flat piece of strap, welded to a short piece of pipe, with a threaded rod welded to a hook for the bracket.  A nut was threaded onto the rod, whole contraption slipped over the frame & power steering pump bracket, nut was tighted & when belts tight, all 6 bolts could be tightened. Then the nut was backed off, contraption removed, belts stayed tight.  Worked slick too, but a pain to put in/take out.  No pressure was ever put on the resivoir, so no leaks happened........more than once.  Left it in the truck when given to son in law & he has since sold the truck.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
Reply:Yes, yip I have this exact same set of clips for doing electronic work like soldering wiresa together with one hand on the torch and one on the solder. But for welding you may be better of making a steel assembly table with clamps you drop down into checkered holes, kinda a minature frame table, and everything is them easy to square up by sight.
