Hi Guys,             Im new to this forum. I can tig weld stainless fine with out burning it ect (Black Colour) How ever I want to be able to produce wide beads like in the pics. Is it Torch motion, gas, tungsten ?? I have a Miller Dynasty 200DX with foot control ect, 1/16 red tungsten, # 6 cup with gaslens , 100% argon 20cfhAny help would be great Attached Images
Reply:hey alex i have the dynasty 200 as well and love it anyhow.   torch motion and filler with help you achieve wider beads.  i have noticed that some times i will be cruising along with a bit to much heat and not getting a wide enough bead do to the fact that i am forward traveling to prevent burn through instead of backing the pedal off and making a nice side to side sweep with the torch to achieve these nice wide beads.             also some of it is mental i think for some reason when i think TIG i think nice small fancy beads which just doesnt work long term in applications that will take abuse pressure etc.    hope that helps somewww.burdettenetworks.com
Reply:Are those pics yours?, If so, I don't know what your complaining about. If you want to increase the size of your bead try 3/32"  tungsten, more heat (amperage), and 3/32 filler. And maybe slow down; but if you are already worried about burning through, I wouldn't suggest slowing down."SOUTHPAW" A wise person learns from another persons mistakes;A smart person learns from their own mistakes; But, a stupid person.............never learns.
Reply:Not getting the black color has everything to do with heat input.  If the piece is still too hot once the shielding gas coverage is lost, it will turn black.
Reply:Where/how does the 4130 fit into this?
Reply:Thanks for your replys and advice,we build roll cages for race cars out of 4130 and a lot of stainless parts also. I want to step my welding up a notch and try to produce beads like in the pics, my problem is I have been trying to produce the wide style beads like this on stainless which means I have to travel too slow and burn or too much heat also burning it. Any idea what the torch motion would be to produce these beads? Thanks again for your replysCheersAlexP.S. I wish they were my pics!
Reply:Sorry guys I didn't read your replys properly before replying above, so I take it the wide bead is to do with side to side motion and how much filler you put in. and the black colour on the weld is not burning but the temp of the weld be gas is left so a bigger cup , cooler weld, torch angle to blow gas onto just welded area.Cheers Alex
Reply:Everything in those photos point to running hot and fast.  Probably hotter and faster than most people are comfortable with.  I'm willing to bet the gentlemen welding that uses virtually no torch oscillation, it's all heat input.

Reply:Originally Posted by Joscerb55when you say torch oscillation, do you mean torch motion? it does look like "stringer" beadsiv HEARD that the blueish/yellowish/orange color on stainless steel welds are the colors you are looking for while welding stainless using t.i.g
