So I'm building  a box out of 3/4 ply wood to store my screws and nails. And I'm not really sure how to build a hinge that will open and close the lid . Also if anybody has a simple latch idea so that it would be able to lock . ThanksMillermatic 211 with mvp plugs miller titanium series welding helmetstihl chain saws 8 ft welding table
Reply:trip to the hardware or farm store will give you ideas or show you that some stuff is too cheap to build
Reply:Pics..   just a generic piano hinge and latch from hardware store?  seems pretty simple to meTiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:maybe we are missing something here but why would you build a simple hinge when you can buy one for a $1.50?Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge

Reply:Lots of options to do it. I'd google or youtube it. You can use plate and tube/pipe slices or go whole hog and forge the whole thing.200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.
Reply:I think I would have just cut up an old leather welding glove and made a strap for the back of the lid with a couple screws securing it to the lid and box, and another screwed to the front of the lid that flapped down with a buttonhole slit to latch to a screw in the front, Better yet, I probably would have stole the ol ladies sewing box and threw them all in there, it has hinges and she would never find it, with a few in the closet, she probably never miss it either,

Or fishing? I've had to boat a lot of fish to get my money's worth out of the boat, rods and reels, tackle, etc. But in the end, I get to brag as I serve them up to friends and neighbors that I caught them, cleaned them, and cooked them. Some skills, be they expensive to pursue, are worth preserving in case the **** hits the fan someday and the grocery stores all go dark.JMHO,Papa

Reply:I've used drilled 3/8" nuts welded to fb,with 3/8" cr for pins and have also forged a few by curling 1/4" fb around cr.as well.Brian

Reply:Thanks for all your advice and ideas. i just remember when i use to go to my trade school we made a few for are projects and such.  And i have the metal on hand  so its costing me time and running my machine. Also it would be a heavy duty box and i can brag to the people i work with about it .I have a few ideas on how to go about this. when i figure it all out ill be sure to post pics. Reply:Only on WW can a question about a hinge start to look like an argument by others..............I think something that is lost here is the fact that you can learn new things building a hinge that can be applied building other things. Reply:here is one i made for a door on a smoker. weld a strip of metal (this is 1/4" maybe 1-1/2 "wide and  6" long) (3/32 7018 85 amps) to a piece of 1/2" pipe..cut the sucker in three pieces, put a 1/2" rod in it and there you go... Attached Images
Reply:pipe ans solid round
Reply:I just build about 25 hinges, why cause I couldn't buy what I needed, offsets etc.Pipe works and its a lot more work, DOM tube is the way to go no inside seam, a 1/2 DOM with a 1/4 inch solid should work great on any plywod box. The DOM is .260 inside diameter so it is perfect with the 10 thou clearance. If you want smaller then its tube and brazing. But I agree with the previous sentiments here, if your can buy it thats the way to go, much faster and cheaper in the long run. Everybody should build a set of hinges once, teaches you a lot about alignment and overpenetration of welds.
Reply:The last time I made a hinge it was for a sheet metal brake that I need to finish a project (weekend, no way to buy a brake before I needed to be done). I didn't have any pipe that would work so t drilled holes in 1/4" plate and put solid round stock through those holes.Hobart LX235Victor 250 Oxy-Acetylene Rig (welding and cutting)Bobcat 773F-350, 1999, 4x4, 16' 10K# trailerOutdoor Wood Burner - 10 cords/year

Reply:a hing is normally a tube or a extension with a hole in it with a pin going through the hole, there are some wood hinges that are simple, http://woodgears.ca/wood_hardware/hinges.htmlhere are some simple hings I made so a section of a tower platform could hing up out of the way, (in the pictures) made out of a 1/2" pipe and some shaft, this was made so the section could be hinged up  and slide off out of the way if necessary, Attached ImagesLast edited by Farmerboy; 07-09-2012 at 08:26 PM.this picture show the platform section tilted up so it would not interfere with the Jin pole, Attached Images
