One of my favourite threads on this board has got to be;"Got to pass up a job and I REALLY need it but can't do it for stupid reason."http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=30507There's a HUGE amount of "MIG" information on that thread which got me thinking about some of the members here and their amazing skill sets.  There are so many users willing to share their photos and welding procedures it's truly amazing...  The problem for some (many?) of us, is that it's VERY difficult to 'grasp' what it is that they are trying to convey.  Some of us definitely learn or "Get it" by actually seeing it done (Visual Learning) due to our Left / Right brain Strain...   Specifically, the link to the thread above is a perfect example of which I speak..ZTFAB, DAVID R, ZAP and MANY others, are AMAZING Craftsmen and undoubtedly produce some of the FINEST welds I have ever seen, along with many others here on the Forum.  I realize that MANY of these individuals are CRAZY BUSY and have VERY little time for themselves, let along their families, but....I was wondering if there was a way to somehow get members to create a 'short video' on a specific 'welding procedure' or How-To that members would REALLY like to see ?  This could be done as a compilation of selected members or as a compilation of ONE individual showing various Tricks and Tips of the trade but with their 'very own spin' on how they like to have it be done.  This is something that could be posted to a 'Members Only' area of this forum or a simple site that someone is willing to share (members only kinda thing..) bandwidth (I have no problem donating).  There is of course another option as well....The reason that I am asking this is because I saw it done on a Digital Photography site and it seemed to be IMMENSELY successful.  Many of the members even set a 'nominal' price for their OWN DVD's, these of course were the ones who wanted to PACK it full of Projects and How-to's and such...  This could also be an option with SEVERAL members on a single DVD as well and have someone 'oversee it'...Speaking for myself, I would EASILY pay 20, 30 or even 40 bucks for 'VISUAL' instruction on how to set-up machines specific machines (that users own..) and see 'first-hand' how to make amazing welds from various members of this forum.  I'm pretty sure that I'm not the only one either....In any event, I thought it might be worth asking about....seeing as so many of you want to share with others, what better way than to teach the new guys / gals something that you 'just won't see' in a classroom or on the job....I would think that the 'attention' brought to the members who are in 'said videos' would likely be VERY beneficial and likely open some lucrative doors down the road as well..(custom jobs and such...)Anyway, Just something to think about...Cheers All !/Jman...
Reply:Great idea. I did a video for the knife making community a while back and although I had shared the information freely before, the video became quite popular.Unfortunately many here may not have the equipment or time to create such a thing but I sure would like seeing it. Forget the through the hood stuff even if necessary but seeing ZTFab all set up and going through the motions would have saved him and many others a lot of typing in the thread you referenced above.Good idea.
Reply:I tried to make a video of pulsed spray vertical up and one of a tringle weave vertical up with 7018.  I am not near good enough with the video to make anything you can see.I have been thinking bout a "Pretty mig only" thread or a vertical up thread.I can start these and see how they fly. Here is a link to a video of pulsed sprayDavid Last edited by David R; 05-22-2009 at 06:31 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:There is already plenty of how to videos out there regarding welding, what do you think these will offer that those dont?Have we all gone mad?

Reply:No, I didnt answer my own question at all, and why would I refer to "How to" videos by people who dont know what they are doing?  Believe it or not there are compentent welders outside of this forum who work on real projects every day.http://www.amazon.com/Covell-Welding.../dp/B000VKH1OMhttp://www.millerwelds.com/resources...llermatic.htmlOff the top of my head 2 places that would be great to start off, theres many more im sure.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:That's kind of what I do.  Here is a link to a 1 hour video on pressure washing equipment:I am half way through a video on flux core welding using equipment from Harbor Freight.  It covers the various machines offered by HF, how to set them up, and how to use them.  it is NOT an instructional video on how to weld though.I"ll let you know when it is finished.  It should be around $19.95.  And yes, that's my ugly mug in the video!

Reply:Seems like every thread lately is challenged by someone. Remember, if you are not interested there is nobody going to force you to participate. There is no anchor tied to your *** so if you don't like a thread, you can move on to another. The suggestion was How To videos by the member HERE. Their Tips and tricks and special skills. It would not make sense to me to suggest a How To thread by the members of ANOTHER forum. All of the videos I have seen on the Miller site linked above shows people welding a couple inches of weld in perfect conditions. They always use new steel and they are boring. They do not show the things that jman suggested.I have no interest in seeing some old goat (like me) drawing zig zags on a chalkboard or try to explain something without the verbal training needed to get the point across.I want to see ZTFab set up everything to do the welds in the other thread. I want to see David R setting up his machine and tackle some odd project he was asked to do. I want to see ZAP set up and do some TIG welding.I want to see someone totally screw something up and have the others here point out what they did wrong and get them on track to become a better welder.I want to see one of the guys that fixes large items like broken backhoe buckets in the field. I would like to see a video build of a project.Miller site and all the books I have seen don't show this stuff. they just have classroom type training videos that can put me to sleep faster than anything. Those videos do not make you want to get up after watching them and go do something. You just think, "I can already do that." They are good for the beginners but for those of us that can already weld most anything we want still want to know how so and so does that cool thing he does.Give jman a break, he made a good suggestion. For the people here that can offer up videos, please do. jman and I want to see them as I am sure others would also. I would also be interested in the cameras people use to create their videos, it will help people like me who don't have a video camera know the capabilities of a few when we can go shopping for one.

Reply:Thanks JMan.  I have made over a dozen "Special Interest Videos", and making more all the time.  I also produce them for others that want their own videos to sell.  For others, I have made videos for anything from Gardening to Dog Training, even made one for hair and make up for those little girls who do the pageants.  The 'Host" of the video has since sold a few hundred of them.  My pressure washing series has only sold a few dozen.  In the works I have: 1) Flux-Core Welding with Harbor Freight Equipment, 2) A Soldier Speaks - 1 1 1/2 hour documentary about Iraq war vets returning to civilian life, and a few more.*** Sparky#1 made me think of something.  Perhaps members who have watched an instructional video could give a review of it?  Maybe talk about what is in the video, how easy it was to follow, whether or not they fell asleep, cost of the video, and where to get it?
Reply:I made a video that has sold approximately 700-800 copies. It is part of a series for knife makers. Here is the description.http://www.ccinstructionalvideos.com..._anodizing.htmThese people sell a lot of them but the "Artist" gets a lot more if people buy directly from them.I have had good reviews from this but I only provided the knowledge and building on camera, I did not do the video or anything else. These are done with expensive cameras and came out awesome.Bob
Reply:I'm up for shooting a video of ZTfab doing his thing if he's up to it (are you, paul?)  I have a video camera, not HD, but it should get the job done and have decent editing skills.  seeing it in person is the best.  but if you dont live local enough to him, video will have to do.  although.... Paul talks 1,000 miles a minute in person, like this:  completely opposite to his welding philosophy of "get comfortable, take it slow"
Reply:Hey, I never said I was against it.  I was asking what you expected to get from members that you couldnt from other sources.  Im not saying its a bad idea, im trying to understand what your getting at.Me personally I dont care because I dont learn well from videos anyways.  If it works for you, go for it.Im just tired of people acting like the world revolves around what happens on the internet without actually seeing what else exists first.Have we all gone mad?
