I would like to understand how to weld using 6010 stickup to now I've used 7018how to use 6010?
Reply:6010 is a deep penetration rod, better for a root weld.  7018 is a capping rod.Last edited by Jack Olsen; 05-27-2009 at 03:02 AM.
Reply:same polarity of 7018, ok?I tried 6010 but it seems it's a little bit more difficult than 7018perhaps, it should be used differently..
Reply:6010 is a DC rod. 6011 is an AC/DC rod, same rod different flux. 6010 works best for me DCEN. Less spatter, easier control. 6010 has to be worked, not dragged like 7018. Push and pull, side to side, make eee's, j's or c's. However you explain it it needs worked. Long arc it and you can drag it for capping. Practice with it and you'll learn how it works. As a rule 6010 is used as root and fill, capping with the LH 7018. I've made many welds using 5P (6010) all the way. Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.                                         -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches

Reply:6010/11 are whipping rods.  Whip forward and watch it dig into the base metal, pause back and watch it fill in the crater.   Or, you can do small circles instead of whip & pause.   Small circles work good in a flat/horiz fillet.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:Yep, and yet every line, construction job or other code work I've done getting caught running 6010 DCEN gets your certs yanked and you sent down the road. Must be different in OZ.The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:cut your amps down a bit, whip it, and watch for the spatterGo Cards!!!!!
Reply:Actually 6010-11 can be whipped, drug, weaved, or crammed in the gap. And it can be run up or down. Just depends on what you need to do with it.
Reply:It is different overseas.  Like english units of measurement, I think the USA is still the only country that prefers to run 6010 in DCEP.  It's how I was taught to do it.  But when I started working with international pipeline customers, I found out that many other countries prefer to run XX10 electrodes in DCEN for the root pass on pipe.  If they run cellulosic rods for the fill and cap, they switch back to DCEP.6010 in DCEN works well, but runs differently.  It takes some getting used to.... 6010 downhill for root pass, in DCEN polarity, is pretty much a drag rod.  Set your root opening and land right, and it almost welds itself.  And with the arc buried in the joint, you can almost run it without a welding helmet... Reply:6010 was the most used pipeline and structural rod for decades. 6011 was the most use repair and fab rod where they had ac power to run transformer machines. 6020 was a close second.    7018 used to be regarded as a "dummies rod" for guys who could not hold their arc. Just drag it along. It was regarded as too picky, you had to have too close of fit ups, and it was intolerant of contamination and rust.     More recent weld specs use 6010 less, they are not low hydrogen, most specs now want low hydrogen.      Don't expect the welds to be as smooth as 7018, 7018 is a flux shielded rod, with metal powder in the flux, kind of a portable sub-arc. 6010 and 11 are gas shielded rods, sort of like a portable co2 mig.      7018 is easier to write proceedures for, penetration is determined more by current, less by the operator, the weld is smoother, and somewhat more dense. Operator technique is less important, as the weld metal is more fluid and is less capable of tolerating fitup issues and is less resposive to arc length.          The slag from 6010 and 6011 is made up of actual metal impurities, very little flux residue. It can be welded through with a little care. With good proctice I have seen x-ray quality welds with 6010. But it will leave porosity more often than 7018. 7018 slag can't be welded throug, slag inclusions are worse with 7018.       6010 and 11 are the most versatile rods, they are not as fluid, they are true all position. We have a pile of underwater rod that is basicly wax coated 6011. 6011 will weld through manure, dirt, rust, paint, crap of all kinds and achieve a good weld. it is tolerant of poor fit ups and will work with a wider range of power settings. because it leaves a softer deposit, it is less prone to cracking or pulling out base metal. it works well on cast iron if it is welded with the cold skip method, or the stir in recast method. They have also been used for decades as scrappers rods, turned up to high power settings they will cut through about any type of conductive metals. During WW2 oxyfuel tanks and sets were in short supply. Electric arc cutting was promoted as a substitute for repair and fabrication work.        6010 has less metal to melt than an equal diameter 7018, so it runs with 10 to 20 percent less power. It takes a more skilled welder, someone who can hold arc length to run it, it will push through most steels. Penetration is much more up to the man running it.Last edited by wesdavidson; 05-29-2009 at 02:24 PM.past work toys; lathes, mills, drills, saws,  robots, lasers ironworker, shears, brake, press, grinders, tensile tester,  torches, tigs, migs, sticks, platten table, positioner,  plasmas , gleeble and spot. Reply:in my experience the 6010/6011 is a faster freezing rod than 7018 so the out of position welds seem easier to run. I personally like the 6011 and have better luck with the AC 6011 rods on what I use them for. 6010 / 6011 are able to dig through rust and contamination better and with less to no pitting at all. Due to the faster freezing they put more "ripple" in the weld. They seem to penetrate very well and are a GREAT all around farm kind of rod to use on all kinds of less than clean metal. 7018 MUST  use  clean metal and ( at least in my experience) does not like circular patterns but more straight stringer types of patterns in the weld procedure.
