E6010 on AC?

a before question.My grandad recently gave a stick welder (very old) and i have no idea which polarity it has DC+ DC- or ac it wont let me change where the ground goes or the stinger so im asssuming its ac. he only gave 6013 electrodes which work best on ac. and on the bottom of the front it says ~70 amps so i think its ac. so if you guys have an idea wut it is please let me know(campbell hausfeld 70 amp arc welder, its very small and the picture of the box is just a guy welding and theres a ton of sparks, terrible info but thats all i got)my real question.my friend wants me to build a tressle like thing im not really sure, anyway, they need me to weld it together but all i have are ten pounds of E6010 electrodes and what i think is an ac machine, ive heard that you can run 6010 on ac but its a pain in the butt, has any body ran 6010 on ac? and how is it different?
Reply:Let me guess , it's a 120 volt machine. Not much of a chance of running that 6010. I don't know what you have but I'm guess you're going to have to stick with 1/16 or 5/64 6013.Tough as nails and damn near as smart
Reply:yeah pretty much, my dad actually took those electrodes from his work cuz they were throwing them away butn they still dont want them doing that so i dont want him "stealing" any more
Reply:i have never run 6010 on AC, but my book says its DC only, however 6011 can be used AC according to the book.

Reply:You can't run 6010 with an AC machine. It is DC reverse polarity only. 6011 for AC.
Reply:i get a nice bead with 6011 on dc,,,go figure... try stuff out regardless of what the rules are,,you'll learn more that way than by listening...
Reply:yeah ill just try to use it anyway if it absolutley doesnt work then ill just buy on 6013, the only thing is ive used 6013 once and it suuuccckkkeeeeddd....sad face
Reply:Am not aware of anything smaller than 3/32" for 6010 or 6011  6013 has smaller sizes but you likely will have trouble with them since they disappear faster than a teenager when chores need done.  Hard to follow fast enough to keep the arc.I use 6011 for AC OR DC all the time.Have put 6010 in the stinger of a 3-phase machine at work and switched it to AC.  Couldn't see a difference for the life of me.  Works well, runs sweet.  Try it.  It works or it don't.Gordie -- "I believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant."

Reply:I ran 3 passes around a 30" pipe, 150' in the air the other day. The pipe was magnetized BAD. All we had were 6010 and 7018. I ran the 6010's on AC without much trouble. I still had a little arc blow, but no trouble from running the 6010's on AC. Reply:I've never seen 208 power anywhere always 220. I do know it exists just never seen it. My AC225 runs 5/32 7018 just fine on a 220V 50 amp circuit. It just won't do it for very long due to the duty cycle. I only use the 225 for fun and old times sake anyway, lol. I've run 6011 for many years on both ac and dc. The only difference I have seen is it runs smoother on dc. Works great on dc for repairing water leaks where you can't stop the water. 6010 doesn't do water, lol.The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.

Reply:The real reason a 6010 or Lincoln 5P or 5P+ cannot run on AC is because the flux is not made up of potassium sulfate, rather its made up of sodium sulfate... they way you can tell this is, is an old rule of the last number, the 0 indicating sodium, but if you have a 1- Potassium, AC or DC+!  2,3, are rutile, which can run on AC,DC... your 5,6,8, are low hydrogens... and really DC- is really only run with TIG, but in some cases theres a few Stick electrodes out there that can run that. Reply:I saw this thread last night so i decided to try running 6010 on AC.  It worked very well and didnt take alot of amperage.
