This is a water jacketed tail pipe for a bbc mercruiser.  Bolts to a aluminum exhaust manifold.  The flange is warped, causing a small exhaust leak.  The piece is stainless.  The worst spot is 1/16" out of plane.  The flange is 3/8".  Looking for the easiest fix.  Not trying to fabricate a whole new piece if it can be avoided.
Reply:Weld up the low side and then have the surface re-surfaced....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Well it would be nice to weld it up,  You still need to find a machinest with a surface grinder to make it flat again.  With the flange being 3/8" and the worst spot out only 1/16th, I would just have the machinest re-grind the face flat.It might be nice to post a picture first.
Reply:sorry...had it loaded and didnt post it....
Reply:cheapest, 2 gaskets and some copper RTV. I will look like hell but it probably wont leak and doesnt require a welder or a machinist. The right way would be to have it re-machined but your probably looking at an hour of shop time minimum
Reply:Ok....I get the DA of the day award...I took the part to a machinist today to have them deck it.  I was sitting there at the counter waiting on the guys to get off break and come talk to me and laid a straight edge across the flange.  Turns out the area around the tube is fine, just the area out at the mounting holes is out of plane.  It was about a 30 minute drive...luckily I needed to pick up some stainless stock anyway
Reply:Pity you didn't have a file, then you could have filed it flat and checked the face with a rule or on  whatever is the flattest face you can find.....even that granite counter top you took the photo on.Strange it warped out, not in, as would be expected from the bolt pressure....it may have been that way originally from the manufacturer and just needed a thick gasket.Ian.

Reply:If it's only warped at the bolt holes then it shouldn't matter as long as the are tightened down evenly.Tim Beeker.
