Sorry, folks, I screwed up the thread. Its gone.....  I will have to trade my moderator hat for a dunce cap, I lost the whole thread and can't get it back.  I still have the pics and will re post them.  Anyone else that had or has pics, please go ahead and post them, I think I learned my lesson not to mess with trying to merge posts or threads.David I'm sorry R  Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Ha ha ha....been there done that David.I wish somebody would have showed us how that part of the forum works. One day I just started merging and clipping and....oh f&*k!!http://all-a-cart.comWelding Cart Kits and accessories
Reply:The discussion came up in another thread about push and pull.  Which is stronger.  I have been taught and the references show pull (backhand) gives deeper penetration, push (forehand) gives a flatter bead with shallower penetration.  I did a few tests and took some pics.  I guess from my little science project, I can see push does indeed make for a shallower penetrating bead with a flatter profile. First I did a fillet on 1/4" x 2' Hot rolled steel using my SP100 turned all the way up, (H8) with C/25 gas and .023 wire.  I did a face bend and both pieces did not break.  Today I did a root bend and both broke with about the same effort.Forehand or push on left, pull on right for all picturesI can see from the back side more heat got into the left plate with the push methodLast edited by David R; 06-02-2009 at 09:05 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Today I did the root bend and both broke with the same effort.SO I tried a groove weld spacing the pieces the same distance using .035 wire at 250 ipm at 17 volts and 92 argon, 8% Co2 gas.  (92/8).   YOU can see from the pics the pull or back hand method did make for deeper penetration.  Both samples broke with about the same effort.   Both samples tore away the plate and the welds were solid. You can see a little here the piece on the top was backhand and the weld is a little deeper in the grooveAfter broken.  Part of the plate is still attached to the weld in both pieces.  Draw your own conclusionDavid Last edited by David R; 06-02-2009 at 09:13 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:"Draw your own conclusion"When "push comes to pull" a good weld is a good weld??
Reply:I was wondering what happened..
Reply:Messing with weld-cut-etch just for giggles lately. This is as good a place as any to show one.Really having a hard time getting this "etch" thing down. On this one I thought I had it clean but it etched like it was covered with metal dust. Plus my camera doesn't have a macro mode so I take four pics and get one that's viewable. Not hardly worth the effort. Anyway of the two stringer beads on the flat portion, the one on the left is a pull the one on the right is a push.  The two fillets I can't remember. They were part of a play session too.The flat strap is some 1/4" zinc chromate coated stuff that I should have cleaned better. It spits and sputters and raises heck with a bead if you don't. The wire was .025 which is undersized but it's what I had on. Gas was C-25 and the machine was a MM 175. The other machine has flux core wire an I didn't feel like changing just for a play session. Repeat, the stringer on the left is a pull, the stringer on the right is a push. Point 025 wire on 1/4" material. Attached Images
Reply:Inside the cover of a Lincoln Mig:  Push for horizontal and vertical with gas, pull for with out gas.
