Just thought I'd let you guys know who followed the stolen Suitcase post I made awhile back, how it came out. Cops never did find the identity of the thief and the machine never turned up anywhere. The insurance company paid about half it's replacement value, which wasn't enough to buy a new one. Well with the consistent money from this latest welding job I've been doing, I was able to afford to get the $$ together now and put in the order for a new Suitcase 8RC with meters this week, to replace the older Suitcase 8VS that was stolen from the truck. I got a good deal on a refurbished one direct from Miller, through my local weld shop, for about $200 less than the best deal I could get on a new one. It comes with a Miller factory 2-year warranty and a new Bernard Q300 gun, just like the new machines get. It is a current model too. I'll know the model year when it arrives and I see the serial number. They had an older model one with a 1-year warranty for about $200 less than this one, but I decided on the newer model and longer warranty. I ordered a 50-foot 14-pin control cable for it and got the fully-wired version, which has both 24v and 115v wiring in it, so I can also use it with the XR feeder, which runs on 115v. Since Miller apparently thinks these control cables are made of gold or platinum and prices them accordingly, I also ordered a 50-foot leather/velcro cable cover for it, to protect it from getting cut up on the job site. I'm going to put the control cable and a 50 foot 2/0 extension lead together in the cable cover and run the work lead seperate. I thought about getting two 50' control cables so I can go 100' out with it, but for now I just got the one and I'll see how that goes. I splurged a little and got a 15 foot leather/velcro cover for the torch cable too.I'm very excited about the new feeder and will be using it with the XMT, using power from the Bobcat, though probly not very much untill this current job is done (welding the sheetmetal framing for the school buildings), since all my time is taken up with that right now. For this current job, all I use is the Passport.Last edited by DesertRider33; 06-06-2009 at 11:18 AM.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:Do you find you prefer the RC over the VS? I've heard some prefer one over the other, seems about 50/50. Just curious your thoughts/ findings.
Reply:I can't really say which I like better. I didn't have the 8VS long enough to form a good opinion of it and I haven't recieved the 8RC yet. I did use a friends 12VS one day, running off the XMT, and it was ok, but felt different than other rc bench top feeders I have used. The VS seemed to be alot more sensitive to arc length variations. Next time we do a job together and we have both feeders working, I'll switch off with him and get a good comparison of the two.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Well, after work today I swung by the local weld supply to pick up the new feeder. Yay! Except, one problem... NO GUN! The manager and I both thought the factory reconditioned feeder would come with a Q300 gun, just like the new ones. The thought that it wouldn't include the gun never crossed our minds. Apparently, it doesn't... there was no gun in the box the feeder shipped in. So, the shop offered to sell me a Q300 at their cost, great, except... their cost is $200 and that's about all I saved by buying reconditioned instead of new. A new feeder comes with the gun. So... I'm waiting till the shop calls Miller to find out if they forgot to ship the gun, or if the gun is just not included. If it's not included, the shop is going to return the reconditioned feeder for me and order me a new one with the gun included, since the price is about the same for new with included gun versus reconditioned plus gun at extra cost. May as well get the new one with the full 3 year warranty and no previous operating issues. So.. I wait...MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Having the remote on the 14 pin & gauges on the feeder will become priceless to you as time goes along. I have a pair of ESAB Mobilemasters without remote or gauges. They work great but having to return to the power source to make heat adjustments gets old especially if you are up in the air.I have got to the point I don't do any field work anymore & just use them once in a while If one of my in shop feeders is giving problems. One of my MIG 35 L-TEC has the burn back control acting up right now. so one of the Mobilemaster is gonna see a bit of service till I get that figured out. Reply:Yeah I've seen them on ebay for $100 before.Yeah I'm looking forward to using the meters to set it up. Most of my migs have dials with numbers that don't mean anything (except the 350P). It's so much nicer to set the machine by actual volts and inches per minute. As an update, Miller is sending out a new Q300, no charge. Should be here in a few days. They also didn't include the drive rolls, so the shop is going to call and ask them to send out the drive rolls the machine was supposed to come with. Maybe next week I'll be able to weld with it...For all the extra hassle of dealing with important pieces of the machine missing from the box, I think the next machine I buy will be new rather than rebuilt. I saved some money, but not a whole lot. I'd rather not have the hassle.Last edited by DesertRider33; 06-16-2009 at 12:25 AM.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Those are a couple large OOOPS on Millers behalf on a refurb that is that near new cost. Do you prefer Bernard guns over others?? What back connector does your new feeder take? Standard Miller or EuroI've never owned a Bernard. Far as that goes I'm not sure I have ever used one. I've always used either the Lincoln Magnum, standard Tweco #3 or #4, Eliminator, or SpraymasterIF IT WORKS, DON'T FIX IT2 Lincoln CV-300 / LN-7 GMALinde-VI 253,400 & 450 w/MIG35 feedersCNC Table with Oxweld O/A & Hypertherm 1250G3Lincoln Ranger GXT 250Hobart-MicroWire 300ESAB Heliarc 161ESAB-Mobilemaster 2 CC/CV Feeders& more
Reply:Yeah I'm a little disappointed with them right now. As long as they take care of it in the end, it will be fine.I do like the Bernard Q guns with Centerfire frontend. They work great and are very durable as well as customizable. I don't foresee myself buying any other push mig gun than Bernard in the future. I've already converted my Spoolmatic to Centerfire and will be converting my Python too some day.The wire drive appears to take a standard Miller style power pin gun connector, like most recent Millermatics. I'll find out for sure when the gun arrives. Or I may get ansy and steal the gun off my 350P for a bit so I can play with the new toy.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:The big problem I have if I were to switch guns I'd have to buy 4 to use & 1 backup. Not to mention my CC/CV feeders that have Euro back connectors. Then there is the question of stocking cunsumables. Right now 1 style nozzle, insulator, diffuser & contact tip fits all my guns. Othar than a 180A 10' I have for running .023 when I need to.All the above guns I listed use standard Lincoln or Tweco consumables (interchangable between the 2) other than the Eliminator. When it's used up there will be no more of those. I like the gun but consumables, other than liners, are at least double the other guns. I really like the Spraymaster better than any of the others. My LWS gets them custom made for them from Tweco with the old style tweco/Lincoln consumable ready. A 300A 15' gun runs $159.00 New. Although they come in a plain white generic looking box. They are not a Tweco copy, They are the genuine article inside the box.IF IT WORKS, DON'T FIX IT2 Lincoln CV-300 / LN-7 GMALinde-VI 253,400 & 450 w/MIG35 feedersCNC Table with Oxweld O/A & Hypertherm 1250G3Lincoln Ranger GXT 250Hobart-MicroWire 300ESAB Heliarc 161ESAB-Mobilemaster 2 CC/CV Feeders& more
Reply:I haven't tried any of those guns. My friend has a 12' Tweco Fabricator 250 gun on his Passport. It's a very soft, flexy hose and the gun is light and small. The problem he had with it was burning up the plastic frontend with fluxcore wire. We converted it to Centerfire and no more problems with the frontend so far.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:I've never lost a front end due to heat. I know that Tweco builds a cheaper line but I was thinking it was trade named WeldSkill. I've never had or to my knowlege seen a "fabricator" gun. I usually buy 300A guns too. Seems that so many of the 250 guns will only accept up to an .045 liner. I like using a 1/16" liner with .045 wire. I don't have nearly the feed problems with the larger liner & have never had a wad up due to the larger liner. One of the production jobs we do there isn't anything under 1" material in it. The weld up procedure required by that particular customer demands 3 pass stringer beads on most of it. There are several V joints that get welded the full thickness. again stringer beads only no woven passes. On this job I am usually running 250-300A & an estimated 600-650 or so IPM of feed. That pretty much maxes out what a 300A gun will handle. I used to buy 400A guns but they were enough heavier that welder fatigue by the end of the day is a problem. I know my right forearm would ache pretty much the last half of the day till I went to the 300A guns.IF IT WORKS, DON'T FIX IT2 Lincoln CV-300 / LN-7 GMALinde-VI 253,400 & 450 w/MIG35 feedersCNC Table with Oxweld O/A & Hypertherm 1250G3Lincoln Ranger GXT 250Hobart-MicroWire 300ESAB Heliarc 161ESAB-Mobilemaster 2 CC/CV Feeders& more

Most of it is overhead, standing on a ladder. The Fabricator gun seems pretty nice, except for that plastic frontend.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:1st pic is the Fabgun. If that's the gun I can see why there would have been problems. That is something I'm sure is for price competition with import copies.2nd pic is the Eliminator. Notice the metal shielded front wand. The really nice thing about these guns you can loosten the knurled ring at the front of the handle & swivel the nozzle up, down, or twist. Also note the trigger placement. Lots further from the heat.3rd pic is the SprayMaster. Pretty much the same as the Eliminator other than the swivel feature. It melts behind the slip on nozzle. The gun itself I don't like, but the cable assembly is nice. The middle one with the rotatable neck is probly closest to a QGun.
