I had a guy call me a little bit ago and ask me what dry head tig welding is. I am guessing it is some sort of slang for something. I have never heard this term before, but we both thought it might mean a weld made without filler metal? If anyone knows what this is please let me know.
Reply:Maybe autogenus(sp?) TIG welding....TIG welding with no filler metal being added.Just a thought'Mike
Reply:Google, it's amazing....https://www.hobartwelders.com/weldta...ad.php?t=34021
Reply:oh yeah that explained it all! i think you need a different search engine or something cuz i still dont know what dry head tig welding is. my buddy called me and has a weld test somewhere but they want him to be able to dry hand tig weld. i told him hes a good tig welder and whatever the hell it is he should be fine. im still curious though if anyone knows!
Reply:As hot as its been maybe they just want to see if he can weld without dripping sweat into the puddle.
Reply:This is what I got from reading that...  The third poster called it a dry head.  Like he's calling the power unit the "head" and it is "dry" because he doesn't have gas hooked up.  So it sounds like it means gasless tig?
Reply:My first thought was that it was air cooled.  That would be the opposite of refering to a water cooled as "wet".  But I thought, what the hell, I'll google it and just do a link.  Could be one of them old timer self taught slangs that don't really exist outside of a few people that have known each other forever.
Reply:Or something with the water cooled torch maybe, just a guess? no water flow = dry??? got me!Miller 252Miller 250Miller Syncrowave 250Esab Plasma Powercut 1250HF Basic oxy/act torches
Reply:I've always heard "dry head" referred to as a gas-cooled torch.  As for "dry-hand", that one's new to me.

Reply:you know what, maybe he did say dry head.....i had a few beers already when he called. Thanks for all the responses though. If its just a gas cooled torch he shouldnt have a problem.

Reply:I would hate to know I was heading in to a test "assuming" I know what they want.  Why not call up and ask.  I don't know any test you will fail or inspector that will fail you because you don't know the right term for something.  Heck, I think I hear at least one new slang term on a job a week I have never heard before.Jamie WebbWelder & InspectorBusiness and HobbyLincoln Pro-Mig 180 with Spool Gun and Lincoln AC225
Reply:Dry head welding is impossible here in Lousy-anner at this time of year, 102 degrees and 70+percent humidity! SWEATY HEAD WELDING! Peter
