Hiya folks, here are some pics of my gmaw multipass welds on some lightpoles. I would be open to any opinions.I have been welding for alittle over 6 months, I went to school for the basics and have pretty much learned as I worked. Attached Images
Reply:Looks excellent. I'm not that good with GMAW on round stuff. Do you have a positioner?edit: probably not for a light pole. Is that 3 passes?Last edited by LarryO; 06-14-2009 at 01:58 AM.
Reply:We use a foot pedal turner, so that helps but at times can be real tricky.
Reply:Spray?
Reply:how does the turner attach to the pole? At work I used to build up a lot of shafts cuz the greedy bastards refused to shut down for a single bearing failure. I always thought that a couple of powered rollers would be cool. Just set the shaft on top. Would have to be used with a set of idler rollers at the other end, but it would fit any size shaft above a couple inches.
Reply:I believe so.

Reply:Any chance you could steal a pic of that turner. Mine has always just been in my head, never got the ok to build one.

Reply:Very Very Nice welds.
Reply:Wow, looks great, you are a true professional.Working on cars and bikes is my hobby, learning to weld the pieces together is my quest.
Reply:Nothing wrong with those welds to my eye...looks top shelf...Do they do UT testing on the welding ?
Reply:Sometime they do UT, depends if the customer request it. The only ones that have failed UT was my first couple trys, no problems now.

Reply:Looks great! Did you answer whether it was 3 passes?
Reply:One root and two cover passes.
Reply:Looks good. What size fillet is it?I'd rather be hunting........USE ENOUGH HEAT.......Drifting around Aussie welding more pipe up, for something different.....wanting to get home.
Reply:Looks just like it is supposed to. Good work.
Reply:Looks to me like you're favoring the pole a bit much on the first hot pass. Try to bring that bead down some so you have equal leg lengths.

Reply:Valmont? We might work together.
Reply:Just to weigh in and concur with everyone else...I'm impressed, not knowing your profession and that I work in a occupation that has boilermakers and viewing some of 'their' work you definately can hold your own. |
