I am welding 1/4 steel to a car frame and I am having issues welding it it 1/8 7018 rods on the over head. I was thinking of using a different size and lower amp rod to fill in the. Gap and then run 7018 rods.  I am using a everlast pro 205 welder so I can't use 6010 rods.   Uploaded with ImageShack.us
Reply:P.s my issue is that in some area the edge will melt and i can't hold the.arc .
Reply:For starters, sanding/grinding, cleaning off both the frame and that raggedy torchcut edge, isn't a nice thing do....it's necessary. I see paint, rust and torch cut slag. The grownups (including myself) clean, grind and sand as a matter of course. It never ceases to amaze me that newcomers really can't be bothered to doany form of decent prep, then wonder 'why?' their welds look the way they do.Breakout the popcorn, this is going to be an entertaining thread.Blackbird

Reply:Try using 3/32 instead of 1/8,less heat
Reply:It's a. Frame for a Monte Carlo that is going.to be hopped with hydraulics a local show. Also I am a new comer that's why I am asking question. I took this project as a learning experience as a favor for a friend. This car is going to get a few shows and then recycled.  So I do admit I dis not prep for those same reasons.
Reply:I don't know why anyone would need to weld 1/4" plate to a car frame as car frames are 1/8" or lessIf those are cuts to make it bend were you want it then you just made weak spots that will have to be welded up 1/8" plate and a mig welder would have been a better way to gotry 6011 if you don't want to clean it and do it right anyway www.georgesplasmacuttershop.comPlasma Cutter and Welder Sales and Repairs--Ebay storeTec.Mo. Reply:Agree with what everyone else said.PREP.PREP AND MORE PREP.    7018 is designed for clean metal. Also its a lo hydrogen rod and needs to be kept sealed till used or put in a rod ovenWOW, I am surprised we have not got an Everlast joke in yet... that said, its the weldor not the welder that is the problem here.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250

Reply:Honestly vehicle projects are not "learning" projects, especially something having to do with the frame even if it will eventually get scrapped.Everyone else covered prep, so we'll move on from there. You are having issues because you simply don't know how to weld yet. Trying to learn to do out of position welds in an awkward position like under a car is just asking for problems. Might as well learn to juggle chainsaws blindfolded while riding a unicycle on the high wire. You'll have as much luck.1st you need to get yourself a lot of scrap and start with the basics. Can you lay nice consistent beads in the flat and horizontal positions every time? If the answer is no... Do not pass GO, do not collect $200 and go directly back to step one. You MUST be able to see and read the puddle to have any chance at doing vertical. If you can't do this with flat/horizontal, chances are you won't do well in vertical until you go back and do so. If you can't do vertical, then overhead will be impossible. Also with stick, you must be able to differentiate what is molten slag, and what is molten steel. If you can't, go back to step one and learn to do so. Once you can do good practice welds in a comfortable position, then try to do the same thing while simulating the work on the vehicle. Tack up the practice pieces under your table and then try to weld them.Picts of your practice welds will help identify problems, but I'm betting they are due to not being able to read the puddle yet..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:IDK if it's true in your case or not, but some car frames are heat treated/tempered.  This can be altered by the heat of welding and may create a weak point as well.  Will this car e on the road, or just destroy itself like the one in the video?TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum

Reply:I no longer have the information for welding on GM car frames but you CAN stick weld on GM truck frames.  The web page is called 'GM Upfitter' I believe.  If you don't mind the critique, I'll give you a couple of pointers. The bead in the top photo shows that your travel speed was a bit too fast for the first 75% of the weld, but improved near the end of it.  In both weld photos you tend to skip out of the puddle at various points.  This will go away with practice.  It is a good call to use the smaller electrode and lower amps.  When welding flat overhead, keep your work angle at 90 degrees and your travel angle between 5-10 degrees. Hope this helps.Ranger 225Weld Pac 100Power Mig 180CMagnum 100 Spool GunHobart EZ Tig 165iSurf for cardiovascular exercise.  Saltwater is good for you.

Reply:If you flip it over, the pic looks different.  I don't do any 6010 or 6011 so I couldn't say   It almost looks like 7018 though   Some telltale undercut on the thicker plate, with flow-out onto the car frame maybe "Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Anyhoo, 3/32 7018 would be the ticket, somewhere in the upper middle range.Maybe the pic should be this way "Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/Originally Posted by farmersammAnyhoo, 3/32 7018 would be the ticket, somewhere in the upper middle range.Maybe the pic should be this way Attachment 207281Attachment 207291
