hydraulic crane

Anyone ever build a hydraulic truck mounted crane? I'm tempted. I tend to think that rebuilding a used one would be more practical/economical. I can't find a cheap one and I think I could make one that is more what I want. Articulating with a winch, and rated for about 1000lbs, and around 15-20 foot reach. Any thoughts?  Smart *** remarks don't help, but I'll take them anyway.Man invented metal, he can do whatever he wants with it.KMAC
Reply:I brought this topic up a while back. It is something I have planned for this summer. I get tired of trying to lift heavy objects into my truck or onto a trailer. My plan was to have one with two trailer jacks used as outriggers to take stress off the receiver hitch. Reply:im not sure exactly how much you are looking to spend but i have a Kevrek 1500 mounted to my truck (5t hino flatbed) and it comes in more handy than you would think the amount of times it has saved my back is unbeleivable i recommend that you spend the cash and get a powered hydrualic crane  i used to have a mechanical one and the improvment is a night and day difference

Reply:Well I came across a free engine hoist last night. has one bent leg on it. I work for my mothers real estate company, and one of our houses had a ton. Ok three tons of junk in the back yard. I found a very heavy duty engine hoist. So I'll either fix it. Reply:i work at a sign shop and the cranes we use up and down is hydrolic. hydraulic piston moves the tubes upand down and the extension is cable.

Reply:didnt build it but I searched for it forever, persistance paid off. to me,power rotation was important because my wife uses it alot in her biz and a heavy load can get away real quick if your not real level. I finially found this auto crane with power boom, swing, boom extend. It will do 900lb at 17'. or 3,000 at 3' we use it a lot, anything from taking the welder off the truck to lifting to camper tounge for easy hookup. I reccomend buying but if you want some info on it to help in a build it can be found on the autocrane web site look under operators manuals and d/l one for free.btw it's electric over hydro. Reply:Good site to gather ideas from is www.westernmule.com   Nice units also, believe they have a model that fits into a 2" reciever hitch.  Good luck.
