I have a Lincoln Invertec V-250s stick/TIG machine, and I have been using it to TIG mild steel with straight argon. I really like the welder, except it doesn't have a solenoid to shut the gas on/off. Right now, I am simply relegated to cutting the valve on/off when welding, which wastes a lot of gas. What are my options in converting this machine to a solenoid, or some other way to control the gas at the weld (instead of manipulating the valve)?

Reply:I added a gas solenoid and "off delay" timed relay to my ESAB. This allows the gas to turn on when the foot pedal is depressed, and it starts a timed postflow when the pedal is released. I don't have all the details here with me, but basically, you wire from the contactor pins of the remote current control connector on the machine to the time delay relay, this activates the relay with the foot control or any other switch wired to it. The power to the gas solenoid is wired to the other side of the relay. Your machine probably has 12 or 24 VDC available off the remote connector that can power the solenoid. That's the rough idea of how to do it.

Reply:ASCO certainly makes a valve for this application, not sure what model is appropriate and low price, so I suggest calling them. http://www.ascovalve.com/ Once you figure out what you need, voltage and pipe size, check eBay also.I had a used valve off of a scrap MIG feeder, but I did find several on eBay. |
