I'm trying to decide how to lay out the supports for an approximately 4' x 4' x 1/2" welding table.  All the material is from the scrap yard, so ... bear with me on materials.   I have 2.5" x 2.5" x 3/8" angle iron for supports.  (Actually, they may be wider, I can't  measure them right now).I'm hoping to leave my options as open as possible for mounting1) my post vise2) receiver hitches3) various clamps along the edgeI'll also likely be mercilessly banging on the table, includingheavy work on the edge, so I wanted to run at least one support to the edge.So I'm looking for ideas/input.  The attached photo shows  something along the lines of what I was thinking (where the supports would all be flush with table of course, not stacked as in photo).I was thinking to mount my square 3" leg/tubes in the cornerswhere the angle iron beams meet up (on the inside of the supports toward the center of table). Thanks for any tips. Reply:I would inset my supports at least 6" from the edge. By doing this you can get a 6" C clamp onto any item you are working on without interfering with a support........... "mercilessly banging"....... ? I normally do this on my anvil.  Let us know what size hammer you will be using so we can formulate suggestions. For that one support at an edge or corner you may want to get a piece of 3/4" or 1" plate and use it to reinforce the heavy use area. Are you going to anchor it down, mount it on casters or just put leveling screws in the legs? Thanks,HoboLincoln SA200's... at least 15 - 20. They come and go. Growing partial to the "Short Hoods" in my old age. Last count on Short Hoods was 13 in possession.
Reply:I have an anvil, but I tend to bang other things that I'm ... disassembling ... in a vice or just on a sturdy table.   I was figuring that the 3/8 inch angle iron plus the 1/2 inch plate along at least one edge would make for a reasonably solid banging or heavy element mounting area, but I have more plate I could use.  How would you combine that plat with the existing plate/support?Was going to pass on casters for now and just let the table sit in one place.
