I hunt in a very hilly area.  Hollows, ravines, and gullies litter the topo.  Last year my son (age 9) shot a nice buck and it was total misery trying to drag it out of the hollow.  I built a deer cart, but it was still straight up-hill.  I don't own an ATV, and wouldn't have been able to get one down the hollow I hunt anyway.  All I needed was to get the deer to the top where the trail was.  I'll save the rest of the story for my grandkids someday.....i really don't want to re-live it.  So I came up with a winch that straps on trees.  I can think of a million uses for said winch, but this year, I hope to be using it for dragging deer up-hill.  I  thought of a come-a-long, but a winch should move it quicker and hold more line.  3" Channel 3/16ths (from the scrap pile).   Winch came from Menards.....  $15. Reply:Nice, thanks for sharing.Quite useful.
Reply:OMG, this is the CAT'S MEOW!!  I've been looking at all sorts of ideas, such as come-alongs, power wagons, pulley systems, something!  We have a 165 yard hill do drag up where we hunt and I was really thinking of hunting near the road if I didn't have a good solution.  This is such a creative idea!!!  I'm gonna make one of these this week!    I'm so excited about this device!!  So cool!!
Reply:Do you have a picture/post of the deer cart you built that you can share with us?
Reply:I just used my winch yesterday on an 8 point buck that my son shot.  I can't tell you enough how wonderful it was to have.  The deer landed in a ravine at the bottom of a hollow .  I cranked the deer up to the trail where i took over with a deer cart.  I will put my cart on here soon.http://www.youtube.com/user/c599209/videos
Reply:The pic doesn't do this justice.  The view down is steeper than the camera shows.  I used 2 ropes in order to reach further without having to move the winch so much.  I stretch one from the deer to the end of the winch rope.  then I crank up to the second rope, unhook, and then unwind again down to the deer.  I only had to move the winch 3 times this way, which was enough to get the deer to the path for the cart.  My son was able to run the crank as well, from which both of us benefited. Reply:Forgot to say.....:    I have enough rope for about 70 feet.http://www.youtube.com/user/c599209/videos
Reply:Now that is a sweet idea.  Would even work as a hanger.  Through the rope over a limb and crank her up....Very nice.
Reply:Cool.  Although I kind of think the snatch hook is a bit oversized for the rope strength.    The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
Reply:Snatch hook???  I didn't know we're allowed to say 'snatch' on this website!
Reply:Why not bolt winch to deer cart and use 7x19 wire rope?Miller Dynasty 200DXHypotherm Powermax 30Lincoln Ranger 8
Reply:Its probably easier to keep the winch 'put' if its lashed to a tree vs trying to secure the cart.  I made one of these as soon as I saw the OP's post.  I plan to wheel it to the top of the hill on the cart, along with my stool, gun rest, lunch, etc.  I'll leave the cart at the top of the hill with the winch and if necessary, only need to bring the winch down.My hill is 165 yards long and I have 100 feet of rope on the winch.  How much wire could I fit if I went that route instead?I'm thinking more along the lines of finding a way to have a small motor to fit over the nut instead of the winch handle to do the turning.
Reply:Very cool, but everybody knows to not shoot downhill, only shoot them uphill or on the road, much easier.
Reply:jokes aside, in my area you are only allowed to shoot from a stand downward... cant shoot at all from ground level regardless if it is at a hill or downslope.miller syncrowave 250hobart handler 140home made 400 amp engine driven in progress...
Reply:Can't you throw the deer over your shoulder and trudge up the hill?http://www.facebook.com/groups/sa200weldersCurrent machines:Hobart G600 Powered by 1967 Chrysler LH-318 (Project)Hobart GF-250(Traded)68 Redface81 Blackface
Reply:Up north we have very big deer.  Two years ago, fwiw, I did shoot one near the road.  It was a real treat!!
Reply:Our deer are small. You could throw em over your shoulder and carry them wherever you needed to.http://www.facebook.com/groups/sa200weldersCurrent machines:Hobart G600 Powered by 1967 Chrysler LH-318 (Project)Hobart GF-250(Traded)68 Redface81 Blackface
Reply:sweet idea, am making one asap, simple effective design, yep, could use some of that in Detroit auto industry, no wait, they wouldnt want to do that
Reply:what about putting a pull point on the cart so you can put the deer in the cart to make it easier to pull up hill, and tie it off for staging to adjust the winch.Dynasty 200DXPassport plus w/ spoolmate 100victor 315c oxy/(act and prop)Miller digital elitemilwaukee power tools
Reply:That's not a bad idea.  Could use one of those 'chain links' someone mentioned they got for free.
