Like roll cages. I am learning how to do it on roll cages now.Is this a good way to learn?I can lay a bead on sheet metal in the flat position pretty decent. Is this a big jump?
Reply:Out of position tube welding vs. flat plate welding?  Yes, it's a big jump.
Reply:I hope nothing that you are learning on is going to get installed in someones car and potentially used.
Reply:Don't worry.  He's cutting all the tubing with his new ox/ace torch.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
Reply:Uhm, when I think of the phrase 'TIG on pipe' I'm imagining 2 or more strings full penetration.I dont know alot about building roll cages but after checking out this article:http://www.millerwelds.com/resources...article96.html..it seems like the pipes are just tee-welded (correct terminology?) together. In my opinion, with that in mind, I would'nt say this is a good way to learn 'TIG on pipe'. I could be all wrong tho and roll cages are actually welded with full penetration. As for wether or not it's a big jump. Out of position welding is always tricky at first but like with all welding it just takes practice, practice and more practice.
Reply:With the control of tig has on the puddle I find it easier in some respects for out of position work. Thats me as a relative TIG newbi, challenge is to keep the electrode and filler angles changing with the angle from horizantal as you mover around the pipe. the bigger the pipe the easier that gets.Learning a procedure what ever it is though should not be done of something structural that has safety implications, get it sorted out and tested on scrap before going there.Lincoln PT185 TIGLincoln 175 MIGLincoln 240 amp AC StickLind Needle Arc plasma welderPlasma cutter, soon???
Reply:Pipe would be good to learn positon welding. Use short pieces and set them up in different postions and joint placement. Make sure to spend the time fitting up the joints though.  Pipe is thicker then most tube used to roll cages so you will have a new challenge when you get to tubing.Miller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.

Reply:Yep, work with someone who does it on a regular basis for a while and let them show you the ropes. Then you'll be good to go. That's how I learned to MIG.
Reply:Thank you William and I agree with ya. The flaming around here sucks. It is a big jump to pipe and yep go get yourself a bunch of plate and start welding with your O2/Acteylene rig. You will learn a lot about how to control a puddle when to add filler and what not without all the settings a Tig has. There is a lot of good information here on the net about it. The ESAB site has a bunch of info on torch welding http://www.esabna.com/EUWeb/OXY_handbook/589oxy1_1.htm check it out it isnt just a safety site. Finding someone that knows what they are doing is a big big help, I learned by watching my Grandpa out on the farm, not a welder but welded cause he had to. We used coat hangers, bailing wire or whatever we had on hand for filler. By the way, guys were welding tubes with gas way before Tigs were ever thought of. WWI airplanes were built that way and some are built that way now. Don't short change gas welding it is an art when it is done well. Reply:some gas utilities still prefer torch welds on their (old) steel pipe because no arc=no spark..safer around gas..
Reply:Hum, no spark you say. But a fully open flame is ok? Does the spark carry more initial energy or how does that work?
Reply:OK I GOTA AX ????                        """""not to flame ya dude""""  just gota ask (ya dont say in your profile) have you ever had any trainingor been around weldingor seen it done i have been reading your posts and i just wana know ????????????????
