I needed a new bench grinder so I decided to build a new stand to go with it.  Since I dabble in woodworking along with welding, I figured the grinder stand could also be home for a belt/disc sander and my homemade drum thickness sander.  I'm short on space (who isn’t) so it was designed with economy of space in mind.Had to snap some pics before it gets all dirty. Reply:Nicely done!  I need a setup like that!
Reply:Looks nice.  I can't figure out what the top and shelf are made of  Very smooth top surface, but the edges look to have grain like wood"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:The top and shelf are made out of birch plywood + 3 coats of gloss black paint.  It won't look shinny and clean for very long.
Reply:HI Here is a pedestal stand I built for my Bead Roller and another for a grinder and I have a belt sander on another.  Basically its a truck/car rim with a vertical pipe welded in it and filled with concrete with wheel to make it portable. I welded casters from HF and put 3 tabs on the bottom edge (1/4" flat stock) this gives it 3 feet to stand on reduces wobble on unlevel floor.have funTom Attached Images

Reply:Yeah, the plans were for 4 locking casters.  However, Harbor Freight was out the day I went to purchase them and I wanted to finish the project.  In the meantime, the wheels fit nicely in a crack in my driveway which holds it pretty secure.  I'll swap out two of the casters with ones with locks as soon as Harbor Freight gets a new shipment.  Many of my project plans over the years have been temporarily foiled by out of stock items.
Reply:I like your cart, but not as much as I like that sander. That's clever.  I still want a planer, but that would probably be good enough for me.
Reply:JoeDirt:Nice job on the grinder table. I also like you homebuilt sander.I too do woodworking and welding as well. I am curious where you sourced the birch plywood. I believe you mean you used Baltic birch? I live in East Texas and have been looking for a source for 3/4 inch Baltic Birch for some cabinets I want to build. I also use it for templates and it works great. Where do you get yours from?Glenn.Sign on East Texas payphone: Calls to God 40 cents......it's a local call...
Reply:The plywood is from Home Depot.  There are cheaper suppliers but if you add in the drive time, gas, etc. it's not worth it for me to go elsewhere. The thickness sander has a 1 1/2 horse TEFC motor inside the box.  I haven't finished the dust collection for the top (yet).  I use it in the driveway with a fan blowing towards it to blow the dust away from me.  Stock is hand fed (push stick) against the direction of rotation.  It works quite well for the money and time I put into it.
Reply:Any chance you've got good pics/plans of that unit? That is really neat. I wonder if it or a heavy duty version would work well for surfacing flat metal stock. I've made some decorative metal trays that would be cool to do like this. I like your cart too. Baltic is pretty expensive around here and you can only get it at one store. But the thin veneers make it nice and strong for jigs and fixtures. Thanks for the post. Reply:I don't have any plans.  I built the sander around the motors dimensions (Grizzly).  The drum is 13" long x 4" diameter.  If you google (images) homemade drum thickness sanders you will find pictures of other peoples designs (possibly with plans).  Here are a few more pics of the sander.
