Hi. New member. Just got a 220v Lincoln 175HD for some automotive projects. First surprise was finding out the plug wasn't the same as my drier. Got that sorted. But now I realize there's no way I can maneuver the welder to my project. Even though I'm just working in my garage, the 6 foot cord in not enough to actually get from the socket to my project. I also found out that they don't make extension cords for this stuff. So what exactly do people do?
Reply:Make an extension cord 10 guage wire match the plugs

Reply:Go to Craigslist. Search for an RV extension cord. Amazing how many people sell their RV and later discover the cord they forgot to include with the sale. Thanks,HoboLincoln SA200's... at least 15 - 20. They come and go. Growing partial to the "Short Hoods" in my old age. Last count on Short Hoods was 13 in possession.
Reply:You make or buy an (appropriate, in length and wire gauge and connector/plug configuration) extension cord.http://www.milspec-direct.com/50A-Li...Cords-C17.aspx The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
Reply:Are you close to me? Seems lately every time I buy something it comes with an extension cord. I now have 3 (maybe 4) 20'+ 10 gauge extension cords and only use 1.
Reply:thanks, guys. And thanks for the offer VPT. I found a guy on craigs that has an 25' 30a RV cable sitting around. I can cut the ends and use teh cable with the plugs I already purchased for my adapter. Thanks!Last edited by james.houston; 08-01-2012 at 05:28 PM.
Reply:once I told him I was going to cut off the ends anyway, guy told me he had a 65' section of 10 gauge cable, too, and that he'd sell it for $35. Thanks a bunch for the help guys.
Reply:I'd run that on a 50 amp plug, not 30. Try the stove circuit. You may find that you pop the breakers using the 30 amp circuit. Originally Posted by james.houstonthanks, guys. Reply:The circuit I'm on is 40a, but with 65 ft of extension, it's a good though to keep in mind. Thanks.
Reply:What a score! 65' of 10G was probably close to $300 new.

Reply:I made adapters for both stove and dryer plugs to welder rec. I used old dryer cord and stove cord with factory ends to make a jumper to the welder 6-50P. So that I can use either one if I am welding at someone else's house. Then with a 50 foot 8-3 cord I can weld about anywhere.

Reply:I just ordered 8/3 SOOW for $1.73/foot. Shipping wasn't bad, either--I ordered 125', and shipping was under $25. http://www.skycraftsurplus.com/83soowpowercord.aspx.My local Airgas was $3.69/foot. When they said that, I asked "American dollars?" He didn't think I was funny.... |
