What are some pointers you can give me? I have 3 weeks left of the course and I need to pass the tig pipe and stainless pipe.25 years of age.Been welding since Feb 23rd 2009.LU1007 Millwright (A1)
Reply:Stay away from caffeine. What else was in the course?City of L.A. Structural; Manual & Semi-Automatic;"Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is refined. Iron is taken from the earth, and copper is smelted from ore."Job 28:1,2Lincoln, Miller, Victor & ISV BibleDanny
Reply:When I took my pipe tests the instructor had me practicing with both hands.  So getting used to welding with my weak hand (left) was a challenge, but as you go out into the field you'll find it can be very helpful.  So maybe try to practice that some while you are in school.
Reply:I got my TSSA SMAW 6g ticket and my mig open root vertical ticket thus far.25 years of age.Been welding since Feb 23rd 2009.LU1007 Millwright (A1)

Reply:If you already have your smaw black iron 6G pipe ticket, you will have no problem with the stainless 6G tig test.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720

Reply:started today but I had to learn scratching first. No filler rod yet. Kinda lame but meh. Looks good thus far I hope tomorrow to finish the positions and move to filler rod. I been doing the right hand left hand advice and is going smoothly.  Any more pointers?25 years of age.Been welding since Feb 23rd 2009.LU1007 Millwright (A1)
Reply:This following is list is with a 2G position in mind on a rotary table.Make sure you have some good bevels. Preferably done with a lathe. A tip here is to make a narrower nose. Large dimensions usually come with a large nose, this increases both weldtime and chances for an unsucessfull 100% penetration.Remove all the grease from your bevels before tacking them together. Something with ethanol, dont know what you use over there. When tacking up your pieces use a shim to create a gap between the two pieces. Also be sure to get everything leveled (flange holes, elbows etc). With your piece tacked up and ready to weld apply your gas purge. Seal your weld area tight with i.e alu.foil. With larger dimensions (3"=<) you should seal your root aswell, opening it up as you go. When your aproaching a full 360° be sure to open up for your gas purge to escape otherwise it will just explode outwards.During welding you should focus on pushing filler, dont feed it gently but push it in there. The gap will change during welding, so the amount of pressure you need to apply to the filler will vary. Use a filler that has the same diameter as your gap before you start welding.Amps are very individual. I weld kinda slow, atleast imo. I start by preheating the workpiece, when the workpiece is liquid on both sides of the gap I start applying my filler. When I see that my nose has turned into liquid I advance alittle, but I also backtrack abit while weaving. Heat should be applied on the sides, not in the middle. Last but not least, practice practice practice. This was not the best description. I'm alittle confused myself =) But I hope it helps alittle, dont hesitate to ask if there's something unclear.
Reply:Thanks we do a 6g test tacked on a 45 and have at it. I started my flat filler beads and after about 10 passes and a few pointers from some fellow students I got it going. Tomorrow i hope to advance to the horizontal and then vertical. The sooner I get to that pipe the better. I have 2 weeks left after this week and still 2 tickets to get so timing is getting tight.thank you all so far who have given some advice. Its all going into the memory bank and applied when at school.25 years of age.Been welding since Feb 23rd 2009.LU1007 Millwright (A1)
