Hi all,I hope the image above is visible for you guys, but this is a little problem we encountered recently.  The customer wants to weld a fortification on a (rectangular) hollow section and wants to weld on both sides of the fortification plate that's been placed right on one of the corners of the profile (as shown on the image).  Welders have to be qualified for this, but the question was if those are butt welds or fillet welds.  There is no groove preparation on either of the pieces to be welded. Thanks a bunch,Yoosetsu
Reply:The top weld in the image would be a fillet, and the bottom a groove weld.
Reply:what is  BW ?what is  FW ?need more info to give better answers, type of metal, process stick -tig-migwhat is this going to used in/for?idealarc 250/250 ac-dc tigidealarc 250/250 ac-dc tig #2 used for sticklincoln sp100hh125dual arbor grinder polisher30 yrs of hand tools52 pitch blocks 6p-26prake gauge -pitch gaugeG&D prop repair 918-207-6938Hulbert,okla 74441
Reply:BW = butt weldFW = fillet weldThe bottom weld would be a single bevel butt weld.  The bevel just happens to be inherent to the left piece of material.

Reply:The bottom weld is a flare bevel
Reply:Top weld is a fillet weld, bottom is a flare bevel. It would help is the person qualifying your welding processes knew what the different types of welds were...  Have we all gone mad?
Reply:I was under the impression that a flare bevel groove was when the rounded piece was sitting *on* the flat piece like this:But apparently, it also applies when the flat piece is butted up to the curve like this (this particular example has a backer):Learn something new every day...
Reply:Yoosetsu,    The top weld is a fillet weld and the bottom weld is a flare bevel groove weld.I will take this opportunity to point out that technically when refering to a square groove weld it is not a "butt weld". It is a "butt joint". Also the terminoligy and welding symbols are the same regardless of material type and welding process. Assuming you are qualifying to AWS D1.1, you will need to test to the groove weld which will automatically qualify you for the fillet weld. Fillet weld qualification does not qualify for groove welds.jrw159
Reply:In the diagram the top weld if a fillet. The bottom is a flare bevel.X2 on what jrw said
Reply:dbotos  -  Where did you source the weld joint diagrams?  The weld bead illustrations in the top left, and middle left  are backwards [upside down] and labeled Desired Weld.Yoosetsu  -  I would not use anything from this source as a starting reference for your project.  The information looks like its Bootlegged, and not very well done at that.     OpusLast edited by OPUS FERRO; 08-09-2012 at 11:00 PM.
Reply:Google image search - everything from nekkid pictures to helpful welding information.    It's from this site, under Symbols and Definitions:http://www.metallicfusion.com/The page is showing three different welds, one on each row (although, the first two appear to be just different ways to call out a single-sided flare bevel weld).  The columns show (from left to right) an isometric pictorial of the desired weld, what the symbol would look like placed on an end view, and what the symbol would look like placed on a right side view. Not sure what the circle is for on the reference (horizontal) line of the symbol in the 2nd row, 2nd column.  I know if you put it at the "corner" where the reference line and the leader meet, that means to weld all around.  Also not too up on the side view symbols - someone else may have to comment on / explain those.  But the end view ones look correct from what I know.Last edited by dbotos; 08-10-2012 at 09:37 PM.
Reply:Okay, I found the answer to the circle straddling the reference line - it means to spot weld without significance to the arrow side or other side.  So maybe it's saying to spot weld before running the flare bevel bead.  But, multiple operations are usually denoted by multiple reference lines, with the closest one to the arrow happening first.  I emailed the address listed on that site to ask about it - I'll let you know what they say if I hear back.
