Does anyone here know where I could pick up some 1/2" composite wood? Like the stuff they use for decking but thinner obviously. I can only find 1"+ thickness at Lowes, Home Depot, you know the usual places to look. This will be for a some gates I am building and the customer wants the frame powder coated with stainless hardware and the composite wood. So they want a everlasting gate basically...I told them wood treated with Linseed would last a long time but no go. I dont want to go with a 2" frame with 1" thick slats as this would look too "industrial" for the customers wants. (I personally would like it but its not about what I want). Anyway does anybody have an idea? Even better if someone in Phoenix, Arizona metro area could chime in so I can directly go and pick it up. Thanks in advance!
Reply:Here you go --http://www.newwood.com/I just saw a sample sheet at my local yard last week. Really good sheet. Thanks,HoboLincoln SA200's... at least 15 - 20. They come and go. Growing partial to the "Short Hoods" in my old age. Last count on Short Hoods was 13 in possession.
Reply:I know I've gotten some before, usually as skirt boards to go around the PT 2x joists. I want to say it was made by TREX, but it's been a few years. Depot or Lowes used to sell it, but I think they stopped. I usually pick up the stuff either from 84 lumber near me or at a couple of private lumber yards I deal with.Note this stuff is VERY flexible, especially when it's hot out. Normal TREX type decking needs to usually get set on 12" center joists vs the normal 16" center ones to stop the sag and flex. The stuff expands and contracts a fair amount also. They also sell 100% PVC trim and sheets, usually under the brand name like AZEK or others. They sell it in 1x ( 3/4"), 5/4 ( 1") and I've seen 1/4", 1/2" and 3/4" sheets as well, both with and without wood grain patterns. Again the stuff is very flexible and expands/contracts a fair amount. The nice thing with AZEK is that you can glue the pieces together, something you can't do as well with composition material like TREX. The stuff glues just like PVC pipe, and machines well. I use a ton of AZEK for trim around windows and doors since it won't rot and takes paint if needed. Note if you do paint it a dark color, you will increase the expansion of the material and it can sag if unsupported over long distances.Note FYPON is different than AZEK. FYPON is a foam material with a smooth skin. When you cut it you get raw foam that is a PITA to work with, so avoid FYPON and similar foam based sheets and material if you need to cut, machine and rip pieces. The foam core takes paint very poorly and when the skin starts to erode  for time and wear, you have the same issues. Both AZEK and TREX have pamphlets on how you need to instal the product to avoid issues. It's important that you pay attention to them if you want a quality job with no call backs if you've never used the stuff before..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
