I was doing some reading today and noticed that some people use those steel coat hangers as filler rod when in a pinch. Its mentioned that it's used for light duty and non-critical welding jobs (exhausts, brackets) and such. Does anyone have any experience with this? I just cleaned out my closets and probably threw away 50+ of them. Are they worth holding on to?
Reply:A steel wire coat hanger is an unknown cheap alloy of steel coated with some sort of cheap varnish so it doesn't rust and stain the clothes right away.A real welding filler is a known alloy with known properties.  And no varnish coating.I use steel coat hangers all the time.  To hold up my coat, or a shirt, or to hold something up in the air that I quickly spray paint, etc.  Notice I am holding up non-critical things and not trying to use the coat hanger as a weld filler.    The best laid schemes ... Reply:It has been done, but so has going over Niagara Falls in a barrel, but just like Niagara and the barrel thing, some have tried it, most have failed, and its not recommended to do it!#1. If you don't like what I wrote, or if it offends you, then don't read it!#2. I am living life the way I see fit, if you don't like the way I'M living, tough sh**!
Reply:I have seen a pqr done, out of spite, that used coat hangers as filler."Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful." -- Seneca the Younger
Reply:yes they weld great. who knows what the composition of the metal is really. but i did do a bend test after welding a groove with them and no problems at all.only thing worse than an ugly woman is an ugly weld
Reply:It is not my intention to start salvaging old coat hangers to save a penny.. I was just asking out of curiosity/personal knowledge. I've also read that its mostly done with Gas over tig welding for some specific reason? I'd like to give it a try and see how it goes just for kicks. I wonder if cleaning the rod of the coating would help greatly.
Reply:Yes they work fine. I have used them on bunches of noncritical things. I always run them thru the flame to burn offthe coating first though. Try some and tell us what you think.Lincoln PowerMig 180cVictor O/ABandaids and aspirinI don't know what I don't know!?
Reply:I tig everything with coat hangers.  Customers love the pretty welds they make, especially the aluminum coat hangers.  MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:I almost forgot: on thin metal I have found I need less heat to melt the coat hangar into the puddle than similiar sized RG45. Makes "prettier" beads on thin stuff.Keep in mind pretty is not the same as strong.Lincoln PowerMig 180cVictor O/ABandaids and aspirinI don't know what I don't know!?
Reply:ive often tossed the coat hanger idea in my head. im going to try it tomorrow and record it on my camera, see what i can do using O/A.I break things for a living...
Reply:ive always heard oxyfuel it was ok but not for tig to use coat hangers. ive never tried it. does it really work well? we tried to tig weld with a 6011 a couple of months ago just for fun.we didnt take the flux off or anything. really was a lot worse than i thought it would be.only thing worse than an ugly woman is an ugly weld
Reply:One of the reasons to use ER70S-x is because it contains the deoxidizers necessary for the TIG process. Porosity is a possible side effect. If you can afford a TIG machine, the proper filler is relatively inexpensive. The tensile strength of mild steel is about 36k. The tensile strength of O/A rod is 45k or 60k. ER70S is 70k. Coathanger is anyone's guess. I've used coathanger for O/A welding brackets, widgets, and gizmos with ok results. But my hangers are 30 years old, from back when there was some steel in them. I've tried some of the newer ones and had them melt away as slag, next to impossible to mix with the base metal. 9-11-2001......We Will Never ForgetRetired desk jockey. Reply:Could you cut with a close hanger and an AC-225.. I may try this lol!
