hey every one hope you all are having a great thanksgiving.. I am just getting ready to place my axle under my trailer the deck is 12 feet long and 54.5 inches wide my only problem is placement for the axle i know most every one say 60/40 but where will the measurment be from 60 percent from front of deck or 60 from back to compensate for the toungh lenght any opinions help.please don't worry the welding is not a problem just my spellingthxRR
Reply:The 60 / 40 rule is from the front edge of the trailer deck.I am what I am, Deal with it!If necessity is the Mother of Invention, I must be the Father of Desperation!
Reply:hey DabarThanks for the reply now i can get this thing finished and off to the galvanizing shop before the white stuff gets here.. RR
Reply:I'm no expert.. but I'll give an opinion here ....If it is a single purpose trailer, like boat or dedicated snowmobile... you could also design for finished tongue weight. I.E. boats with a motor on back means center of gravity farther back. snowmobile.. generally weight to the front...I'm not sure of exact numbers, but a rough idea of what I remember finding is... tack the axles... put your load on it, then aim for 10%-15% (I think that is what I used)  of the total trailer weight to be on the tongue... I.E. 1000Lb trailer and load... 100Lb-150Lb on the hitch... I "believe" longer overall from hitch to trailer axle will help with fishtail... (also shorter from hitch to tow vehicle axle..)  Some arbitrary math because I'm a bit of a geek.. the 60/40 rule for the deck means that if the deck is loaded "evenly" , 80% (40/40) of the load is balanced over the trailer wheels, and 20% is somewhere between the trailer axle and hitch... so if the deck is 10 feet and tongue is 4 feet,  then 60% of the deck is 6 foot putting 20% of the remaining weight at 5 feet ahead of the axle... that remaining 20% of the load is then half way between the hitch and axle...  so 10% of the load on the hitch... plus the weight of the actual tongue bringing that value up a few percent. I think I got that right, I'm doing the free body diagram in my head... feel free to shoot holes in my work :P lolNever argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level, then beat you with years of experience.
Reply:I might be too late to reply but is it a two place trailer or a four place tilt no tilt need more info to help you figure out to place the axle.  Just keep in mind that the motor of the snowmobile is up on the front but you already know that.  Stay safe out there and have fun!
Reply:skidoorev9 and pandinusthanks for the reply I am just building this one to  get me by as i am building a 29 foot drive in drive out V nose, but time and space have me waiting till spring to build it so this is just a single bed trailer for now. thanks again for the infoRR
