Hello, new to Mig, Have a lincoln sp-125 with fully adjustable controls. Im using 84%argon mix .025 wire. I have some .050 steel sheet from a steel supply house. What settings would YOU start out with, i found Voltage D and 5.5 wire speed gives good weld less of a chance of blow thru.

Just wondering what another sp-125 owner uses. Thanks for reply.

Reply:Originally Posted by illenemaYes I thought reversing polarity was a no no.----'normally', with thicker material that is the case. I will do this and report.I have stick welded on and off for a long time im used to dragging the arc so pushing is a bit awkward for me. This .050 is trickey even for mig. thanks for the time and info they will be used.
Reply:You are probaly using 115 volt machine with only a few settings?yes, what work do you plan on doing? Is it blind or can you get a dolly behind it?Because with your limtitions warpage will be a problem and you may be able to correct by welding about 1inch and dolly on the weld.Having a welder isn't enough you need: hammer(cross-pein Snap-on) dolly, universal, sanding discs 24 or 36 grit to clean metal and prep, don't use flap discs or hard grinder discs because you will take to much off and it looks nasty. And a shrinking disc off ebay.I really never look at what the settings are for amperage and wire speed, pick one and keep tweaking until you get good results .050 is a bit thick, but cut some chits and try to make good horizontal welds just on regular 050 sheet, look underneath for scaling it is a sign of penetration then move to lap welds butt welds.Start stop welding if you have to.
Reply:Yes thanks for the replys. I buy and use only lincoln wire and tips. I have the largest steel supply house in nevada 2 miles from the house. they have 55 gallon drums of fresh scrap pieces. I have .050  .060 .10 .120 ect,, thinwalled steel 1" square stock, flat sheets ect, brought home 30lbs.I have read all the posts and I think I have plenty of info.Thanks.I found that I set the voltage wide open and do fast tack welds weld to weld works well if kept about 2 seconds apart
