A good friend of mine Boyd has been telling all of his contractor friends that i would be able to do welding repair and fabrication.  A buddy of his finds me one night at the local tavern.  tells me he needs professional help. lol  He agreed to my hourly rate and offered one of his employees to help me.  I figured cool!!     Long story short this guys employee had totaled out his work van.  Smashes the cab and bends the frame.  He decided to part out the engine and tranny and turn  the rest of the truck into a trailer.   This is where the fun starts. Reply:I just read the thread title and glanced at the photos and thought you were going to say you were rebuilding the whole truck!!  I imagine it'll be a pretty beefy trailer build.  Keep us posted on your progress.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Hey DuaneYour right it is going to be the heaviest trailer frame I have worked on in a long time. HahaIf you look close at the last 2 pics.  I was trying to show where the frame bent.  Right where the 2x4's sit on top of the frame.  The hardest part is going to be rebending the frame down.  So it pulls level behind the truck.   Right now im guesing the frame is bent up 15 to 20 deg from level.I'm going to use a jackstand for the frame behind the bends.  I'll rosebud heat the frame starting there and see how much force will be required to bend it into shape.I'll also need to bring the front of the frame together to fit the trailer tounge. If you have any suggestions I love learning and hearing new ideas“I'm going to do the thing that God put Galen Beasley on this Earth to do:Have Salon quality hair and weld.Nothing like a good cup of coffee and the smell of 6010 burning in the morning. 971-204-3444 cell API ASME Structural NDT and Repair
Reply:heat it and use a come along to pull together or maybe a small bottle jack  or a porta power and some blocks.  Im no expert but you have to apply pressure even so it bends even i seen it done with 1/2 in ready rod and squeezed to gether to.miller maxstar 150   hobart handler 210 w mig conversion hobart 250 arc force plasma cutter    boston ind cutting torch miller performance auto darkening helmet milwalkee 14in chop saw 10,000 watt generator huge drill press and industrial band saw
Reply:Just need to be careful most truck frames are heat treated and should not be welded on. Don't know what kind of hitch you will be welding /bolting to it.Vantage 300 kubota ,miller 304 xmt ,lincoln ln 25 pro , ranger 305 G, plenty of other tools of the trade to make the sparks fly.
Reply:For my 2 cents cut it square at the end of the box, bulk head it by tying a structural piece across it and tounge it like any other trailer. May be and excellent candidate for 5th wheel or gooseneck depending on what you have for a tow vehicle. I would't bother trying to straighten the mess, could cause problems and take quite a bit of effort.keep us posted with updates looks like a nice enclosed trailer in the making."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400
Reply:I plan to re enforce the frame after i bend it.    there shouldnt be any problemsI gave the guy a few suggestions on how it could be converted  This is the way he wants it done.   He wants to refer me to some of his friends as long as i get in and get it done quick.  I'm excited to put my work truck back to work.... been sitting too long. Reply:i was thinking the same of the hitch... i dont know much about hitches, but arent certain style hitches rated for so much weight pretty much a D.O.T. law?tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/
Reply:So i figured out why the frame bent so bad when the damage to the front of the truck doesnt look too bad. He had 1700 gallons of water (Just over 14,000 lbs) just behind the cab.  In the box of the truck.   The owner and driver were telling me he rear ended a escalade that rear ended another car.   Luckily the driver was very slim.   He was barely able to get off from behind the steering wheel. Reply:I tried to straighten the frame in place.......no luck  it was too flimsy.   I just happen to have a truck frame rail and semi truck pintle hitch at my shop that fit.  I cut the frame behind the bent area and sleeved it with the new frame.   Then bent it in to meet up with the pintle hitch. Reply:More picsBtw this is not going on the road  (thats what the owner says.  Its just going to be used around his shop....Um ya) I know him well enough to know better. I should be done tomm.  I post pics of the finished product. Reply:Are you going put fish plates where the c-channel is welded? Since this is "not" going on the road ya know.
Reply:Wow. 14,000 pounds of water on the back of that truck. The GVW of a 2000 NQR is about 18,000 pounds. Sounds a little overloaded.I have an NPR. It's a real problem staying legal with these trucks. The beds are big enough you can put a lot of weight on them.
Reply:Yeah its overloaded!  That frame is no heavier than a F-250 just taller.  Scary! To answer your question about the fish plating:  Both sides of the frame is overlapped more than a footI was going to add plating anyway but I'm working @ an hourly rate and I was 1 hour past my original estimate.  (Not based on having to resleeve the frame.)  The owner assured me he was not going to take it out of the yard.   The funny part was all of the employee's said "Oh yeah he'll take it on the road."Last edited by galencwi; 12-02-2010 at 06:03 PM.“I'm going to do the thing that God put Galen Beasley on this Earth to do:Have Salon quality hair and weld.Nothing like a good cup of coffee and the smell of 6010 burning in the morning. 971-204-3444 cell API ASME Structural NDT and Repair
